I am scared of single coat lenses because I do some night shooting and I want to avoid coma. I just ordered a MC 50 1.4. I might eventually order a 50mm 1.8 too and sell the weaker one. I like the compactness of the 1.8.

Zeiss ZM 50mm f/2 planar can be had for $600 used, awesome lens.

if you don't mind 40mm then there's the Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4 that are around $350 used

too bad OP cannot boost budget to a grand: cron v4 is so tiny and so killer

OP could start with a 150USD or less Canon LTM 50/1.8, which is no slouch.

Is the cron v4 a Leica lens?

I'm no expert, but isn't coma an artifact of lens design not of the coating process used?

The minolta 50 1.4 is very compact (49mm filter thread in original AF) and costs around $200 and is quite sharp especially if stopped down a 1/2 stop. I have a minolta 50 1.7 MD which is brand new (sent as new claiming it was AF), if anyone wants to try.

that is correct coma has nothing to do with lens coatings. single coating does increase the chance of flare though, which can also be a serious issue for night shooting.

in the below image taken at f/1.2 you can see coma (the triangle comet looking things coming out of point light sources):

here is the same shot taken at f/2 where coma is mostly eliminated:

Yes, and the A7 loves that lens.

worth every penny, and certainly one of the best 50mm ever made.

I think the ZM planar is a good suggestion, but the cron is better yet, and as you can see it's tiny.

I've shot my MC OM 50/1.4 at night, is seems to be corrected enough for your requirements.

Having used both on my M9, I'm not sure I'd say that the Cron is any better than the ZM Planar in image quality. Build wise, though, the Cron is a step up.

And you've got to love that built in lens hood.

Yeah, I did have the V5 model with the hood, which was a selling point. Granted, the 50 Summicron has a pretty well know flare issue, because the interior paint of the lens isn't great, so I'm not sure the 50 Cron with hood handled flare better than the ZM 50P without a hood.
