p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D700 in 2014 still good?

I'm shooting with a d300s and like most d300 users, I'm wanting an update (with a high possibility of going to fx). I shoot alot of sports/high speed and some low lighting that sometines pushes the iso of my d300s. When the rumors of the d750 being a fx "action camera" I assumed I would get that, boy was that a disappointment! I shoot as a hobby so I can't afford a d4 and its honestly more camera than I'd ever use, so I've been thinking about a d700 instead. With how old it is, would it still be a good choice now or even a real upgrade from a d300s? D3s maybe? Would be close to the same price as a d750 with grip

The D700 is still capable of taking fantastic images as is a D3s. In fact some day I'd like to pick up a used D3s.

I would say that with a limited budget that the D700 would be a good option. Very fast focusing , better low light than D300, and shares the same battery grip to get 8fps. I find that I wish I hadn't sold mine. They are priced very good on the BS board here. Good luck with your decision.

6.5 frames per second isn't fast enough for a sports shooting hobby? I didn't run my D700 faster than that when I shot sports professionally.

It probably is but after shooting at 8 fps on my d300s for years, 6 just seems so much slower lol

But it's honestly more than just fps, if I'm spending $3000 I want it have other features that bodies like a d300/d700/d3s have. I don't want to spend that money and end up regretting it in a few months

The D700 is still a great camera. I will use mine for many years to come. One of the great advantages is that it shares batteries, cards and vertical grip with my D300. In your shoes, I would buy the D700 as an addition to the D300s and keep the latter as backup. The D300s will also give you more reach when needed.

If you are going to have only one camera and sell the D300s, it looks a bit different. Then I would try the D750 or consider a used D3/s.

D700's the easiest upgrade for a D300(s) shooter for a lot of reasons including the fact most of your accessories come over directly. No need for new grip, batteries, cards, remotes, etc. Only accessories which change are the viewfinder accessories as the D300 uses a square eyepiece.

The D750 means all your accessories need replacing except viewfinder accessories. D810 at least allows you to use cards, remotes, etc, just requiring new batteries & grip.

A moderate mileage D3 or D3s is another good option, running in around bare D750 option. I'd probably suggest this to the action shooter if you already invested in EN-EL4 series batteries for your MB-D10, otherwise I'd get the D700.

I still shoot rodeo with the D700, it's great thru ISO6400.
Here's one with the 300 f4 ISO800 handheld SOOC

At this point I feel there are many FX options and with new models coming out, the more than capable "old" models come relatively cheap. The D4 prices have come down since the D4s came out but the D3s comes close (except maybe dynamic range, but in real world use the difference may not be so great) and certainly tempting me! The way I see it is from the D300s and entering FX field, you'd get pro handling and extra ruggedness as well as quicker AF and FX if you purchase a pro body. And while the D3s's video isn't great, if choosing between that and a D3 i'd go for it just cause it has that option if i ever wanted to fool around, plus you get that super high iso option.

The D700 is more than capable as well. In fact the used prices mean you could sell the D300s and add a couple of hundred to have that FX and higher iso capability or just keep the D300s as a backup. If you do keep the D300s as a secondary camera, the idea of using the same grip and accessories as mentioned is a big plus. I'd gladly use a D700. Many of my friends love the camera. Probably psychological but it produces a bit more magic than the D600 and D800 in terms of SOOC output. Just my opinion though.

And while the D800 may not be a fast action camera, timing your shots during action and then the ability to use that 36mp sensor for landscapes/less intense shooting might be worth considering especially when the prices have come down so much.

Right now, you've got many options and if you buy used and don't "feel" the camera, you can almost easily sell it for the price you got it for a couple of months down the road. I suppose that's a perk of buying a camera that's already been replaced - that the prices have settled somewhat. If i were in your shoes I'd go for a D3s. You'll definitely feel a greater upgrade than the D700 but that said, the D700 is fantastic as it is.

It's a definite upgrade from a 300s unless you only shoot telephoto or have a whole bunch of DX lenses that you can't afford to replace. Noise control is far superior in the D700. When I upgraded to a D3 and D700 from my D300s I've never looked back. Both of these cameras are a little aged but still produce wonderful images. Here's an image of my D3 with new Nikon strap, using the D700. Still plenty of color and detail.

They just update the D700. It's called the D750... Oh wait, that's the D610 update.

But yeah, the D700 is one of my all time favorite cameras. I actually preferred it over the D3 I had.

I've heard so many good things about the d700, I've contemplated for at least a year now. Either way, I will more than likely keep my d300s as a backup or when I want extra "reach". I only have 2 dx lenses (wide angle), the rest are fx. When I was buying them, I wanted fx lenses just in case I ever did change over. Looks like that was a smart move lol I'd hate to start over now.

I went through 3 D700s as I would get tired of the weight and try the latest and greatest mirror less camera only to come back to the D700. I'm giving mirror less a try once more with a A7s. I figure the only thing I'm giving up is speed and thats something I used less and less each year as I'm having more fun shooting family and candid moments.

I think if you are careful with your framing and don't require lots of cropping, the 12mp sensor is more than capable. It simply cannot be beat if you need a action full frame camera and the used price allows you to speed that extra money on the awesome 70-200/2.8VR2. That combo weighed a TON, and usually slap on the SB-910 and took some great photos on the motocross tracks.

I use a D700 and a D3s for sports. The D700 does a good job.

All of these are great shots! My 70-200 is stuck on my d300s w/grip, so weight isn't an issue. I actually prefer the big build of this combo, and when I don't want to hold it my black rapid is like heaven!

Hell yes!! I shoot with a D800 and a D700. I use the D700 quite a bit during receptions and it's remarkable. Focus is incredibly accurate. Focuses well in low light. AWB is great. Colors are superb, sometimes more accurate, though not as rich, as D800. Great ergonomics. Wonderful file size for processing. And more than capable at ISO 3200. If you shoot a lot of frames, you'll need to slow down, because the keeper rate is nearly 100% with any lens at any aperture. Needs less AF tune than D800.

At high iso the D700 is a good step up from the D300s I am sure you will be very pleased.

Maybe the biggest drawback on the D700 is you have to really nail the exposure on high iso shots where on the D6x0 and D8x0 you can be a lot more sloppy!

It's only as good as you make it. The only times you'll wish for a different camera are when you need to print larger than 20 x 30 (without up-scaling), when you need the night vision of the current gen cameras, or when you need to shoot video.
