p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Harvest Moon over Kansas City 2014

This isn't nearly as good as I wanted. The conditions were terrible. It was cloudy all night. I finally gave up and shot through a thin hazy cloud - hence the poor resolution.Plus - the shot "overfilled the frame", so I had to ad a little sliver to the left and right sides to complete the moon. PP was a nightmare.

Shot with the 6D on a 600mm telescope with a 1.5x adapter.

I much prefer the second shot, which I captured last year with my a900.

I prefer the second shot as well. From my experience with shooting the moon, I prefer shooting Not Full Moons. Full Moons are too bright and contrasty for my taste. The shadows of a crescent moon helps create better impressions around the craters and the montes. Although I have never shot a moon through a telescope. Sounds like fun.

Second by far. Second has character and intrigues the eye. The first is a like still from a microscope: I might not mind seeing that in a textbook or a technical article, but not on the wall.

The 2nd is a very nice shot, I like it. In your first one it looks like there was some movement on your camera as you can observe on the edges of the moon.

Thanks all. The 1st shot, as I mentioned, had some serious work done and wispy clouds about and yes. I see some shake. I should have gone with 10 seconds and not two.....

Well, my opinion on shooting a moon is I totally prefer crescent moons.

But, after you shot a moon once for your own satisfaction, then the real landscape work becomes finding a subject to put in the image. That's why many photographers shoot a full moon either the day before (evening), or the day after a full moon (morning) and you have that well lit subject plus moon. Around Kansas City, perhaps a grain silo or old barn at a farm with a huge moon rising behind it?

I hear ya ckcarr. But isn't the problem with that having 'no' lunar detail, since the moon will be very small when a terrestrial landscape is included? Or are you suggesting adding the moon to a landscape?

I never say add a moon, or anything.

It's all about perspective.

As far as a small moon, that would only be true with a wide angle lens. You position yourself properly and use a telephoto lens, perhaps a 70-200mm. There are many examples on the internet of nice southwest buttes and towers with a huge moon rising behind them.

Sorry - I got confused when you said, "finding a subject to put in the image"
