While #2, #3 and #4 are certainly good images and great poses. The contrast between #1 and #5 is far more telling.
The emphasis in this forum tends to be in awe of #5, close detail from obviously a wild, large bird, difficult to get, requiring expensive equipment. Yet #1, tells a powerful story.
The jutting out of the rock line 1/3 of they way into the composition, the image taken a second after pickup with water still bouncing, the powerful sweep of the eagles wings, the eagle just off the water line, and the leading edge where the eagle is looking to take his prize. These are all powerful factors that lead into A Picture is worth a Thousand Words. Even thin horizontal cropping adds to the strength of the story.
#1 is picture you print and put on the wall of say a doctor's office or the dentist or your family room, because every time you look it at you will know and remember the story.
#5 you've seen a million times taken by a million photographers as soon as they get their hands on a super telephoto and instantly submitted to some contest.
All were well done and executed.
But I believe #1 is the prize and worth a thousand words.

Wow, your words are too kind. Thank you very much for taking the time for such a well thought out analysis/comment. I do happen to agree with you on many of your points. I will admit that it is all too easy to get wound up in taking tight/close shots with long glass. My trip to Africa last year really had an effect on how I look at wildlife photography and compositions. Shots like the first are the result of that inspiration. Thank you again, I really do appreciate it.
