I don't know why you aren't simply replacing the lens you liked and are already familiar with.

If you didn't use the 24-105 IS that much before, I don't know why you think you'd use the more zoom-challenged (range) 24-70.

The 24-105 is selling "used" (often near new, or from a 6D or 5D3 kit) for between $500-600. That's awfully hard to beat, and the IQ is quite good. You can afford to add (as opposed to replace) the non-IS 24-70/2.8 II later on, at no real loss, using the 24-105 for those times you want an IS all-in-one lens.

Just sayin'!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm leaning towards the 2.8 because it's said to be the best available. I have the money put aside, so perhaps I should just go for it. That way I'm not second guessing and looking to upgrade later.

I sold my 24-105L to purchase this lens. It is spectacular, all the way to the corners. Also, if you are interested in getting into night sky photography the additional stop over the f4 will be very useful. And the fact that it is sharp wide open is really great.

I am amazed how sharp this lens is... it has become one of my favorite lens along with my 300 f2.8 II.

Happy shooting,

-Chris White

I agree with you, but I am looking to sell my 35L 1.4 also and have read great things about the 24-70 2.8 IS, so I'm hoping it can replace two lenses in my bag. I have the money put away from the sale of my 5DII and the 24-105. I used most of these lenses either mounted or in decent outdoor lighting conditions, so the extra speed of primes isn't always needed. It's going to be tough to replace the nice look the 35 1.4 gives, but I'm really trying to simplify my kit. I also have a 28 2.8 IS which is a great low light lens.

On that note, last night I was able to aquire a nice used 24-70 2.8 II which should be here in a few days. I'll see how it compares to the 35 1.4 at that point. I know it will beat the 24-105, especially at 24mm, albeit at a much higher price.

It's called the 16-35/4L IS.

For the photos that I generally take with the 16-35mm zoom, I found that even in low light, I would often stop the 16-35/2.8L II to f/3.5, and compensate by increasing ISO on my 1DX or 6D. I definitely use f/2.8 on my 24-70/2.8L II and 70-200/2.8L IS II, but not so much on the 16-35/2.8L II. For me, the update to the 16-35/2.8L II is already here.

I am going to look at one of these in the next few days. I have a 17-40 but the reviews on the 16-35 f4 IS look pretty good.

I like having that extra stop though and at this FL I really don't need the IS. Still hoping for an updated 2.8 mkIII.

DOF and bokeh differences between f/2.8 and f/4 is massive in terms of being able to isolate a subject. I regularly shoot at the limits of the usable current ISO range in concert photography with an f/2.8 lens (12800, 25600, sometimes up to 51200), so that extra stop of light means a LOT to me.

Just a friendly reminder that your usage case is not everyones and not to assume you know how any variable will impact their usage case until you actually know it.

Although I'd understand the first part of your message, I definitely did not share the feelings you've mentioned in the end. I thought that bipock, unlike a lot of forumers, did not expose his/her opinion as the Truth that everyone had to follow.

Indeed. It is possible that Canon won't update the 16-35 f2.8. Instead releasing a 14-24 competitor. But being a PJ staple I think they'll have to, but they'll take their time.
