p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which Canon 24-70?

I'm in the process of selling off some gear and reorganizing my kit. I just sold my 5D II and 24-105. I didn't want to sell the 24-105 but the buyer wanted the whole kit. I liked the versatility of that lens but didn't use it that much.

I am now thinking about replacing it with the Canon 24-70 2.8 II. I've read some great reviews. It's not cheap however but looks like a keeper lens. There is also the 24-70 f4 IS that I could consider. Seems like a decent lens that comes in at a bit cheaper price. I think I could replace the 24-105 and my 35 1.4 with just one of these 24-70 options. I have a 70-200 2.8 IS II to go beyond 70mm, albeit in a larger and heaver package than the 24-105.

Any suggestions on what I should do here?

i think you have to ask yourself the question
does what i shoot MOVE , and more to the point does it move in low light ?

do you like to shoot at 2.8 ? (you didnt have the option with the previous lens I know)

on the face of it the mk2 2.8 is the obvious choice . but the f4 looks a very good lens and is smaller and lighter .
if what you shoot normally is f4 and smaller and is slow moving or still where the IS will help more than a stop faster then probably the f4 is the better choice (it does look a better lens than the 24-105)

you should also consider the Tamron 24-70 and the sigma 24-105 .
the Tamron almost gives you the best of both worlds and the sigma looks a very strong (but not exactly small) lens

the 24-70 II is large and expensive, but it is the best lens for image quality if you can afford it.

Just buy the 24-70 f2.8L II - no use second guessing.

I went for the 24-70 f4. To me, IS was more valuable than a stop given current FF camera ISO abilities. Haven't regretted that decision. Not to mention, DOF is so small between the 2.8 and 4.0, I don't know that you could tell the difference.

I've owned the Tamron since it came out and have been happy with it but was interested in the new Canon f4 IS. I have both now and like the smaller size and weight of the Canon.
I have a software program called Exposure Plot that analyzes data of a given group of photos and gives totals for focal length, aperture, etc. I just checked thousands of wedding/event photos and less than 9% of them were taken at larger that f4. And I'm sure a lot of them were taken with the fast primes that I use.
I've noticed that the Canon f4 focuses faster and the IS settles down quicker than the Tamron. The macro function means one less lens to carry for ring shots etc.

I've used the Canon's 24-70, the Tamron 24-70 VC and now have the 24-70 II. I found the Tamron to be an excellent lens, but there were a few things that I didn't like much. The hood was so tough to get on and off that I thought that I was going to hurt then lens. I had to grip the barrel while it was extended in order feel comfortable even putting it on and taking it off. The zoom operating the "wrong" way ended up being something I didn't ever get used to, and the zoom ring didn't get less stiff after 5 months of use. The IQ is terrific and the VC is excellent - but at the end of the day, it was the little functional things that made me move on from it.

The 24-70 II is actually a bit lighter than the Tamron lens and 5 ounces lighter than the original 24-70. It's 4 ounces heavier than the 24-105. It's also only very slightly larger than the 24-105 you're used to.

DOF and bokeh differences between f/2.8 and f/4 is massive in terms of being able to isolate a subject. I regularly shoot at the limits of the usable current ISO range in concert photography with an f/2.8 lens (12800, 25600, sometimes up to 51200), so that extra stop of light means a LOT to me.

Just a friendly reminder that your usage case is not everyones and not to assume you know how any variable will impact their usage case until you actually know it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm leaning towards the 2.8 because it's said to be the best available. I have the money put aside, so perhaps I should just go for it. That way I'm not second guessing and looking to upgrade later.

I recently bought a 24-70 4L IS and its character is similar to the 24-105L but one ups it in control of distortion, flare, vignette and has much better corners. However, it's only slight shorter and lighter so not much of a weigh saving. I really like the 4-stop hybrid IS and its ability to nix my weaving forward and back during impromptu macro is amazing. The .7 macro ability is what put over the top for me. And now at $999, it's a sweet deal. However, if you don't need IS or macro, the F2.8 is probably a better choice.

I really like the 24-70 f2.8 II. The best zoom in its range I have used. Not much point in having primes except for their extra speed or IS.

I do think f2.8 is a good feature in a standard zoom. Not such a big deal for general use in the 70-200 mm range, as you have IS and there is plenty of bokeh available, but with f4 in a standard zoom I find I miss the blurring capacity enough times to be glad I have the extra stop.

I ended up with both, if it moves and in low light 2.8 II. If it sits still or needs some magnification 4.0L. Both are excellent choices for what they do...

I actually debated about picking up a 24-105 as well, so many ppl are trying to part it from the kit that its driving the prices down to 700'ish levels.

Get the 2.8. Other benefits often overlooked in these comparisons are the improved autofocus and brighter viewfinder.

All the people who love taking pictures of test chats will also tell you it's crazy sharp.

24-70 f/2.8 Mark II.. simply the best investment I've ever made photographically as a primarily corporate event & wedding shooter.

(I know that's a strong statement)

I think it's going to be the 2.8. Buy nice or buy twice. Thanks for all the feedback!

The 24-70 II and 70-200 IS II combo is impressive. They cover a lot of ground at high IQ in only two lenses. I'm hoping Canon updates the 16-35/2.8 to match them.

Don't forget the 3rd option, the 24-70 2.8 v1 - you can get it 2nd hand for a good price.

It is f2.8. What I have found is:
1) I only use my 24-70 for indoor work. When I am outdoors, I either use primes (better than 24-70 v2) or 24-105 because 24-105 has IS (for hiking handheld) and 70-105 range. So paying big bucks for a 24-70v2 is not worthwhile and it woudl be better to spend the money on TS24.
2) For indoors with action, IQ is not as critcal and the 24-70 v1 is pretty good.

I think you would use the 24-70 f4 even less, since its f4.

It's called the 16-35/4L IS.

For the photos that I generally take with the 16-35mm zoom, I found that even in low light, I would often stop the 16-35/2.8L II to f/3.5, and compensate by increasing ISO on my 1DX or 6D. I definitely use f/2.8 on my 24-70/2.8L II and 70-200/2.8L IS II, but not so much on the 16-35/2.8L II. For me, the update to the 16-35/2.8L II is already here.
