Hello All,

I'm looking for information on technicians/shops with whom folks have had good success with repairs/service on Canon's Legacy Lenses, like the 200mm f1.8. Success stories appreciated along with contact information.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Stu

Never had the ability to use US repair facilities (I'm in the UK) but I'm pretty sure the usual answer to these questions is MIDSTATE

I've dealt with only one shop for Canon repairs, mostly bodies; one older FD 100 macro, and all of Steve's repairs and restorations; camera seals, parts, were fantastic. Had my original; heavily used A-1 restored and it was perfect, no more Canon squeak, clean as day one. I highly recommend giving him a call, he's a friendly guy and former Canon tech, the link bellow is to his website. He's located in Sparks, Nevada, and services Nikon and most other brands as well.

There's a Japanese dude who used to work for Canon, Toshiro? I am not sure if that is his name.
Basically, if he cannot fix it, Canon cannot either.

Some repairs are simple mechanical tasks, and if parts can be found, lots of places can do it.

However, if you need AF recalibrated, only Canon and their authorized repair stations have the software to write new AF info to a lens.

So, it depends on the issue you need repaired. Places like Midwest Camera Repair fixes multiple brands of high end lenses.

They are a authorized Canon and Nikon repair center. I had my vintage Nikon 300mm f/2.8 repaired there, they provided a online price quote and had it back to me quickly.

The big issue for older lenses is parts availability. Parts for older lenses are often non-existent.

There is a very experienced freelance technican in Germany, his website for contact details here:
http://www.gletscherbruch.de/foto/fotografie.html
On his website are only few of his repairs, he has done a lot more, some documented on http://www.dslr-forum.de/search.php?searchid=10403385 - all German language.
One of his works was a microchip to make old Sigma AF lenses usable on new Canon DSLR cameras - with no more aperture problems.
And he invented a sensor wet cleaning way:

I assume you mean in the United States, though the wording is vague? (I understand this is a U.S.-centric forum, but folks might remember that we have an international membership-- and the place was founded by a Brazilian!)

The best Canon technician I ever met was in Mongolia. Same story as RobertLynn, but a different technician: If this guy can't fix, Canon can't either. And he'll do it cheaper, and quicker, than Canon could ever hope to. Of course, you'll have to be in Mongolia... I don't think he takes shipped work.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Yes, I failed to specify in the U.S. I forget how far reaching the www is sometimes. Midwest Camera Repair is relatively local so I may start with them.

Issues are very soft focus wide open on the 200 f1.8. Doesn't seem to get rid of "halos" around details in images until about f4. Looks great through viewfinder on 1Ds MKII and 1D MKIII, but not so good in images. Have not tried MicroAdjust on the MKIII but may.

Also some jittery movement to the focus motor operation, especially going from near to far. Sometimes when using AI Servo and back focus button I have to let go of the button and cycle it several times to get focus on far object.

Thanks again for the help.

In checking out Andrew J's recommendation of TF Camera Repair it looks like that may be where to find RobertLynn's "Toshiro" or Toshi as I saw referenced in a Google search. In addition to checking with Midwest, I think I'll call TF and Camera Clinic as well.

Thank you all again!

Toshio at TF Camera has the setup to calibrate your lens. I know from personal experience at least one other shop mentioned in this thread does not have the setup.
