My first attempt at these intriguing animals. I tried with and without polariser and the shots without seem to me better.

One tough subject. For me I really need to see the eyes for the shot to work. Any chance of a mini aquaria setup to get you at eye-level? How do you like the camera?

Hi Phil

i don't think the aquarium is going to work ... they move like greased lightening. The problem with the eyes is not so much the focus as the other stuff in the water ... it is primarily grub in the pond rather than lack of focus I think. But I always have a problem with working out how to adjust for focus through the water air interface.

The D810 is excellent for macro .... I'm using it about 50:50 with the 5d3 ... when I need to crop hard, the Nikon has the advantage, otherwise it is horses for courses.

Waterboatmen, Corixidae, swim the other way up. It is a backswimmer, Notonectidae Notonecta.

Harold

I agree that the Corixidae swim the right way up, but I thought that the Notonectidae were also called water boatmen. Chinery seems to use this notation - has practice changed? Cheers
