Thanks all, I added exposure information, yes the bright spots should be darker, I should address that.
The sun was rising quickly, on the bright sunny morning, wish circles of light through the trees getting bigger, and they posed nicely but trees were in my way and I had to act quickly. Handholding a 500mm f/4 is one thing, but when you wait for their heads to rise over and over, the weight becomes noticeable.
I hope to repeat the experience in winter with snow all around.
I also had an experience with elk about a month ago (I didn't have time yet to pick), 3 big males, one of which was signaling his intentions of wanting to charge me, so after the second aggressive gesture and audible signal I left him alone. Those were with 70-200mm and much closer down to 10 feet at times, so while elk may let you close, their much larger bodies require and sometimes demand more respect. And their young don't quite compare to deer fawns.
