Mule deer in Arizona
All photos are handheld with 500mm II f/4 at f/4 to 5.6, ISO 400 to 800, they were on the move and I had to be too, and exposure was changing. All the fawn pictures were within half hour on one day, last 3 were on a separate day. There were 2 mothers with fawns, but only one fawn posed for me. I wished for a 400mm for full body shots of fawns, but then I would just have wished for 500m right away for closer shots showing facial expressions. And then which 400mm, f/2.8 would just have been heavier, 300mm II with 1.4x perhaps.
It was a special experience to spend time with the group of 12 the first time, 6 the second time, same 6 apparently.
These are Mule Deer, the only Deer species of Rocky Mountains and western states, as opposed to Whitetail (or Virginia) Deer of eastern states.

The last is my pick Robert. The lighting and backgrounds are fighting your subject. In the fourth the bright spot on the fawn's face is great yet the bright spots in the background pull my eye form it's face. You might try darkening the sun spots in the background

Thanks all, I added exposure information, yes the bright spots should be darker, I should address that.
The sun was rising quickly, on the bright sunny morning, wish circles of light through the trees getting bigger, and they posed nicely but trees were in my way and I had to act quickly. Handholding a 500mm f/4 is one thing, but when you wait for their heads to rise over and over, the weight becomes noticeable.
I hope to repeat the experience in winter with snow all around.
I also had an experience with elk about a month ago (I didn't have time yet to pick), 3 big males, one of which was signaling his intentions of wanting to charge me, so after the second aggressive gesture and audible signal I left him alone. Those were with 70-200mm and much closer down to 10 feet at times, so while elk may let you close, their much larger bodies require and sometimes demand more respect. And their young don't quite compare to deer fawns.

Brilliant, love the dappled light. Makes for a wild/real feel. Beautiful, skittish creatures. Well shot.
