p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · macro lenses

I am in the market for a good macro lens. It boils down to 2 : 105/2.8 micro and 105/2 DC micro.
I don' t do portraits, but I like the 105/2 DC. Reason f2 . Is there any reason I should not buy it. I know the 105/2.8 well but I never hold the f2 DC, that is described every where: for portraits. So is its bokeh good just for portraits?
So if you are familiar with this lens, what can you tell me?

Well, the f2 DC isn't a Micro lens, so your decision is made if you actually need a macro lens. Zeiss's 100/2 is the only f2 macro in this range for Nikon, and even then only goes to 1:2 magnification. The 105DC is optimized for portraits, but is a good all-round lens as long as you don't need fast AF.

Note the new Sigma 105/2.8 OS HSM Macro is optically a bit better than the 105VR, and significantly less expensive since the price drop at the end of 2013, I owned one and foolishly sold it. It's on my re-acquisition list.

I don't think that 105mm f/2 DC lens is a "Micro" lens...it's closest focus distance is around 1m with a reproduction ration of 1:7.7 which aren't macro specs at all.

If you have the 105/2 DC money to spend, then by all means get the 105/2.8 VR Micro, it's a great lens!

However, please note that at macro shooting distances, the VR is effectively not operational so that if your sole use for the lens is macro photography then you wouldn't really need to spend the VR money. For portraits and other photography, though, the VR can come in pretty handy!

Another option is the VR's predecessor, the 105/2.8 Micro AF-D lens, which can be gotten used for $200-300!

Hope that helps

I'm curious why you started a new thread? Just use this one maybe?

The 105/2 DC micro IS NOT A MICRO/MACRO lens!!!!!!!

And with macro photography, DOF is shallow as it is ... f/2 will be too shallow the vast majority of the time.

And why are you starting a 2nd thread on the same topic with the same mistakes?

I always heard it was the second, I can't remember what the first was.

What was the first thing again?

Any way, do you remember any thing about 60/.28 micro?

for budget macro shooters.

the nikon 60mm 2.8d is a great little macro lens, i found one locally for $150 worth it to me cause i dont do a lot of macro and dont care about working distance much as its pretty short for live subjects and will block your own light, but the lens is good all around and sharp.

Tamron non VC 90mm macro is a very good lens as well for a good price.

Tokina 100mm Macro ATX pro is great as well.

Sigma 150mm macro 2.8 is great too for when you need more distance.

the Tamron 180mm 3.5 is a pretty good macro lens as well when you need even more distance.

here are a few options for good lower price point macro lenses. check them out

I had the Nikon 105mm 2.8 VR and for some reason just never used it much. I later missed the focal length and decided on the Zeiss 100MP ZF - It's now my favorite lens despite it being manual focus, which I found I was using anyways with the 105. That's could be a huge factor if you want/need AF though.

Some Zeiss samples. For me it's a very versatile lens:

How is the latest Sigma 180 f/2.8 APO macro fare?

I've been eyeing this one and haven't heard much (or anything) about this lens. The sigma macro that always gets mentioned is the 150 f/2.8.
