Bolton HS vs Hutchison HS played at Hutchison home field on a very hot Thursday evening. The turf was very warm and you could feel the heat coming off from it. CC welcomed.

Hi - not bad, but my guess is you are using non top-of-the-line lenses, because you are a little soft.

The image with the most potential is the elbow to the face one and that begged a tight crop; not having that perfect crispness probably prevented you from doing that. It's a nice capture though.

The 5DMkIII has great high ISO performance, so you could look at bumping up the ISO to 1600 and it would probably give you a slightly better result. Also, F3.2 is going to give you a very shallow depth of field; in a multi-player sport like hockey you need a bit more depth of field so you can get a deeper action zone into the focus-usable area. Again, if you bumped up the ISO to 1600 you could probably also bump up a couple of stops for that purpose.

Rgds.

Hi Theron,

Hmm... looks like the SS is varying quite a bit. IMO, 1/400 or 1/640 are too slow for soccer especially given the time of day these were taken per the exif data. Generally, light permitting, keeping the SS above 1/1000 is best. I personally start out at 1600 or more until the light falls at which time I let the ISO take over while keeping the SS above 1000.

The 5D3 is a capable body despite its limitation in fps. Next time out I suggest you give it a go by setting it in manual mode, with SS=1250, Ap=3.2, Auto-ISO turned on and during this experiment place a heavy concentration on keeping the center focal point on the intended target.

5D3 shots at higher ISO's can easily be clean up in PP, if necessary.

Show us how it went afterwards

Matt
