I'm looking to purchase a Nikon 70-200 VR I and I was wondering how you would be able to tell if it is a US model or gray market? The seller I spoke with told me it doesn't have the Nikon USA sticker, but he bought it second hand so the previous owner could have peeled it off. Thank you

"US" will preceed the serial #...have him look for it.
Refurbs will have a "etched in dot" before and after.
Moot point in my eyes, APS will work on either if the
need arises. It'd be out of warranty unless old stock
with receipt. GL

While I've heard great things about APS and their service, I'd prefer to use Nikon service as they're only about 10 minutes away from where I live so I wouldn't have to ship the lens and can just drop off / pick up. If I recall correctly, Nikon doesn't perform repairs on gray market regardless if it's in or out of warranty? Which is why the lens being a US market is important to me.

To each his own. I DID however, answer your question
regarding how you can tell.

I was wondering how you would be able to tell if it is a US model or gray market?

And if you don't believe the Monkey (and I don't know why you wouldn't) you can just drive the 10 minutes to the Nikon center, tell them the serial number and have them tell you.

oops - we must have been typing at the same time; didn't see your response to TM's post until after I typed this. Nevermind...

Not to add confusion, but it seems that Nikon has more than one version of they identify their US models. Mine doesn't have the US before the serial#, it just has the serial#. But next to the gold colored plate that has the serial # on it is a very small oval sticker that says "Nikon USA". It is a pretty small sticker, only 1/4 to 3/8" or so, and I could see it could get wiped off or pulled off. I don't use mine a lot, and it stays in it's case, so it's still in mint condition.

I just double checked my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR1 and it doesn't have any "US" before the serial number either (or anywhere). Just the little oval sticker.

As a matter of fact, although all my lenses are US versions, just checking, the following also do not have "US" anywhere:
24mm PC-E
45mm PC-E
85mm PC-E
16-35mm f/4

Don't think it's a reliable way to tell , if it ever was.

Huh, 8 of mine have the "US" so I'd guess calling Nikon with the serial #
...might be the ONLY sure way of knowing. Gotta give 'em a WTF on this.

All of mine except the 16-35 f4 has "US". Second calling Nikon if it doesn't.

had the 70-200VR before, it did not have the US prefix on the serial number. but it did have the small "nikon usa" sticker near the nameplate where the serial number is etched.

my 50mm and 85mm primes have the US prefix though.
