1. This is my favorite. A nice sense of place and I love the light and the clouds.

2. Pass. This is a type of composition I've noticed a lot around here, and I don't get it. Here's why: dead space. Why not go to her left and shoot it tighter and vertical? Also, look at the bottom left of the frame. Pom-poms (?) that either needed to be included or cropped out completely.

3. This is better. Nice sportrait.

4. See #2. Again, the composition is just awkward. Solos like these should be shot vertically. Gorgeous background though.

5. Looks a tad OOF. Also, you cropped the defender's body.

6. Nice peak.

7. This is fine.

8. A little motion blur on the defender but it doesn't kill it.

9. This has a pinkish () cast to it.

10. Nice peak.

11. His eyes are closed. I doubt he's praying.

12. This is okay, but the pink cast is back.

13. The best action shot of the lot. He's coming at you, and it's framed nicely. Well done.

14. This is pretty cool too, but is that sensor dust near the lights? Also, look just above the stands to the left. See that white spec? Might be dust as well. Easily removable in post.

Watch how you compose your sportraits, and watch your framing in general to not chop bodies, limbs, etc. All except that one are sharply focused but there is that pink cast (I'm assuming it's some of the lights in the poles; I had the same issues the other night and couldn't figure out what it was). Your sense-of-place shots here are cool and it seems like this is something you are looking for as I haven't seen you concentrate on it in the past, very cool.

Keep it up!

Eric

Eric,

Thanks for taking the time to look and to go over these with a fine tooth comb. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the honesty you express and your willingness to push me to improve. Think it's safe to say that I am actively seeking "sense of place" shots because of previous conversations we have had.

Can't figure out for the life of me where the pink is coming from on those late game photos. I know that the lights at both ends were horrendous -- and I took the TC off my 400 to get enough light late. It was only a couple places on the field where it happened.

Rick,

Nice action captured. Looks like you got a bad case of cycling lights with the pinkish cast.

#'s 3, 5 look a bit oof, #11 is soft due to heavy cropping.

Fish On -- you are right on the money about those pesky lights...Can't we just play on mostly cloudy days at 6:00 PM? That would make is so much more visually appealing.

Good catch on the crop on #11. You are right....too aggressive there.

Thanks for weighing in.

Rick, overall nice set of images, not going to go a lot into detail as it has been said above about some soft and cycling lights etc, but I am going to go against the grain and say I like the portraits in the horizontal format, the first one of the cheerleader is kinda of awkward because of her eyes, but the football player I like, the background adds to the image, probably not for everyone, but I like them. I think some headshots look better horz than vert.

Hey Andy,

Thank you for looking. I have always had a great deal of respect for your talent.

I am glad you commented about the spectacular background on the football player "sportait." That is very close to the school colors and when I saw the blue helmet, white jersey and that glorious gold background, I couldn't resist. I looked at a vertical crop and so much of it was wasted.

Hey Rick!

Sorry it has taken so long to post, but awesome set! #'s 1, 12, and 13 are my favorites.

I tried to grab some coin tossing pics last week...but had some timing issues and barely caught the busting of the banner.

Looks like you've incorporated that newly acquired 400/2.8 in your work-flow quite nicely.

JC

Glad to know you are still alive. Was afraid all your cross-training work had buried you.

It's funny how much people love number one -- I knew what I was trying for when I took it because I really LOVED the sky and the light pole. I'm happy with how it turned out.

I also really liked 13. The ball was snapped from the 23 -- which is right on the edge of where I shoot with the 400 and switch to the second body with the 70-200. I decided to go with 70-200 and I'm glad I did. I think the linemen chasing him really added a nice layer of depth.

Gotta start posting your football stuff. I want to see 'em.

Rick
