having tried various options on canon, including the venerable Nikon 14-24 2.8, I would say unless you are shooting nightscapes, the lens of choice is canon 16-35 f4 IS lens.
I do wholeheartedly agree that canon 14 2.8 is about the most grossly overprice canon lens, esp given alternatives. However, I would look to samyang 14 (I have tested them side by side), if you want 14 2.8. The samyang is sharper in the corners at 2.8, , has far less flare, has far less CA. I has more distortion, but Ironically a lot easier to correct as there are ACR profile for it. And of course there is always a question of variablity which is introduced by use of an adapter.
