It will be interesting to see if you get a response to this question, and an explanation as to why. I have 300 and 500mm Canon lenses, but I see no reason to attach a Sony A7x camera to one. Mirrorless to me is all about size and weight savings, and convenience of travel. Once a supertele is in that equation my thought is, since there is no meaningful size/weigh reduction, why use mirrorless and the inherent AF disadvantage that if offers (at least right now). Even cost of the camera becomes less of an issue, since many supertele lenses are VERY costly. I keep a 1DIII and IV just for supertele use.
Now, with the upcoming 40-150 and 300mm Olympus pro lenses - which are comparatively smaller and less expensive - that type of kit offers size and weight saving over my current gear and I may end up selling all my remaining Canon gear to go totally mirrorless.....finally. I know AF performance will suffer compared to what I am used to but hopefully that deficiency will be made up for convenience.
Anyway, that is my stream of consciousness non-contribution to this thread. I look forward to thoughts from someone who has the type of setup mentioned by the OP. ...Show more →
not carrying an extra giant dslr is a pretty good reason for me. i don't use any kind of pod so the size difference is significant for day of birding. also, i also hate AF even for birding, but that's just a personal quirk. i agree that one of the olympus OM-D cameras plus either upcoming 300/4 or a manual 300-400mm lens would be more compact by itself then an a7 with equivalent length lens and provide good image stabilization. i think adding an EM-5 instead of a teleconverter might make sense for my own use when i need the extra reach.
i really want this combo to work since it's so tiny:

i've been on crutches since i got it though, so i haven't gotten much chance to test it (turns out crutches make birds more difficult to sneak up on), and my first adapter didn't let me change aperture.
here's a shot with it through a dirty window though:
