p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · FNL - Week 1

Week 1 for us in the greater Knoxville, TN area, which means the second game for most teams. Here are my pix from tonight. Please share your top 5.

For this game, I used a loaner 1Dx from CPS and the 400 2.8 IS and the 1d4 with a 70-200 2.8 IS II. Most of the night shots were with the 1Dx were at ISO 12,800. I had very little time to play with the 1Dx before giving it a go tonight, as the camera was delivered just a few hours before game time, so some of these may not be processed as well as they could be. And, while Maryville may well be one of the best local teams, their lights are notoriously bad with color shifts and intensity changes, which make a mess of the images.

It was 41-14 when I left with about 6 minutes left and none of the starters in.

Here's my submissions for FNL Week 1. I got to shoot the local high school game of the week (which also just so happens that one of the participating teams is the school my kid is now playing for and he is a Freshman that's dressing varsity, but I didn't think he'd see any playing time...boy was I wrong!) The visiting team won the toss and elected to receive and marched the ball 85 yards for the game's first score (turned out to be their only score), while eating over 10 minutes off the clock. The home team was much more precise and quick on their scoring effort, needing only 2 plays to find the endzone. The final score ended up being 42-7 in favor of the home team and my son got to play the last 5 minutes or so in slop time but he made the most of it. It was a busy weekend with this game on Friday night, then i shot 20 soccer teams Saturday morning, hustled over and watched my kids first Freshman football game at 1PM and decided to just be a Dad and enjoy this one. He ended up jumping a route and had an interception with a pretty decent return. Needless to say, he was mad I was just watching and not taking photos.

I hope everyone had as enjoyable of an opening week of FNL as I did. Can't wait to see everyone's submissions.

Billy-

The home team RB rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown.

The home team QB had a great night, passing for over 200 yeards, 4 TD's and added a rushing TD late in the game.

The visiting teams only touchdown. A 7 yard TD catch in the first quarter.

I'm a little late...but still within the limits for Week...barely

This was my first FNL with my newly acquired gear over the past month...a Nikon 300/2.8 VR attached to a D3s. This moved my D700 with the 80-200/2.8D on my hip and honestly....I hardly used it.

Looking forward to Week 2 tomorrow night.

Jeremy,

Way too much dead space in #3 in what is otherwise a pretty good shot. It needs to be tightened considerably. Think #7 as far as cropping to make it more effective. Nice start to your season.

Best,

Eric

Eric - thanks for the comment and after applying...definitely makes more sense and makes the photo more powerful.

Will consider that 'dead space' more when cropping!

JC

P.S. since I'm in the middle of PP'ing a boat load of CrossFit pics...why not just apply your recommendation...

Now crop to the shoes, to the blue helmet, to the guy on the right's rear end and to #4's shoulders. But this looks much, much better.

I agree with Eric. Tighter is pretty much always better.

With football you can bend (if not totally break) some of the cropping rules.

I might even just crop the upper bodies. Go landscape and start just below #9's elbow and get the tops off all the helmets. You can't see the ball in this shot, but it would be in that crop.

The story to this shot is the ball carrier's face and the multiple defenders. So the tighter on that, the better.
