Hello everyone! I'm Spencer.

This is my first post on the landscape forum, although I've hovered around here for a while. Here's an image I took last summer at Yosemite. I had less than thirty seconds to take the photo before my family managed to catch me and shove me back into the car

I have a bit more background detail in my blog post: http://spencercoxphoto.com/blog/2014/8/photo-talk-3

I like the hazy look. Do you think that is campfire smoke down in the valley?

That's an interesting thought! Truthfully, as with most things, I have no idea

It would make sense, given the number of people who camp in the valley. Or maybe it's steam from the Merced River? Thanks for bringing up that point!

Dude, that is one sweet shot!
I can see you needed a fast shutter speed to compensate for family dragging you back to the snack bar and shop.
They definitely need to give you more time.

Hey Spencer,

Welcome to FM Landscape! My first word of advice is the next time your family is chasing you to leave, run faster! What a cool shot.

I really like the look of this, the way the sun is causing the hazy atmosphere to glow. Very nicely done. Now as a suggestion for next time since you are shooting with a DX camera, I would say get that shoot f13 to f16 for more DOF. If it was that you were hand holding the camera instead of using a tripod, than still I would suggest a minimum of f8. Your shutter speed was plenty fast enough, so definitely get your aperture in a sweeter spot on that lens.

Thanks, and I definitely agree with my settings. It's been about a year since I took that photo, and a lot of my settings from that trip were a bit different than optimal. Live and learn! Although luckily the 17-55 that I used is pretty darn sharp at f/5.6, so I'm not too worried

Thanks for the welcome!

Nice shot, well seen. Yes, sneaking in a shot with family waiting is a reality for many.
Love the warm glow and shadow beams thrown off the high points.

Lighthawk (and everyone else),

Thank you for the comments! It's true, I love going on trips with my family, but it's not always possible to be on the photography schedule I want. And I'm only 17, so I can't legally drive the rental car out for a sunrise

I'm not complaining, though. I always have a wonderful time regardless!

Thanks again!

I too like this image very much. The mis/fog adds to the mood of the image.

So far, I've seen two of your shots, and been impressed by both. What's especially striking is that you are able to shoot at "iconic" (a more-diplomatic way of saying "cliché") locations where pretty much everyone turns out the same composition, and still come up with an original, distinctive vision in each.
