So... I got a sweet deal on a 6D + 24-105 L.

The thing is, I already have a 28-80 L (mini drainpipe). This lens is in great condition.

I doubt that I'm going to need both lenses. I think that both lenses are in the same price range so that's really not a factor.

Which one should I sell?

Or, maybe I should sell both and get a totally different lens?

I've become a big fan of the 24-105L. Terrific focal range for general photography.

My 24-70/2.8L (original) gets almost no use these days.

Sell the 28-80L while there is still some remaining interest in the marketplace.

Why not use both for a while and figure out which you don't use as often?

With questions like this-- the kind with no universal answer-- nobody is going to be able to tell you which is better for you with any sort of logical confidence.

It'll just as helpful telling you to sell both and pick up a 15mm FE.

Sophie's choice

I have similar lens combinations. I have determined that I like to keep both.

If your equipment list in your sig is accurate, I'd say sell the 28-70 and 28-135. Keep the 28-80 and 24-135. Of course, you might be best off selling all four and buying an 8-15 fisheye. Only you can decide (but my initial suggestion was serious).

IMHO the 24-105L is as much as a "must own it" lens as there is for FF Canon shooters. It has a relatively low cost & overall very high IQ and usefulness factor. People just nit-pick. Look at it's use at B&H's canon page by real pros too! Disregard the pixel peeper tekkies is my advice.

Depending on what you get for the 28-80L it might be worth keeping that one too. Even if you got the 24-70II there are many times you'd want the 24-105L. No way around that.

I would sell the 28-80 for a number of reasons. First, it's not being serviced anymore and will eventually break. From a monitory standpoint this would obviously make it worth next to nothing. It works right now and there are people that will pay a reasonable amount to own it as it's a nice lens. Second is the focal range. The 24-105 is both wider and longer which makes it far more versatile. 3rd the 24-105 has IS. This adds even more value to it as now you can get shots that you couldn't get with the 28-80.

I'd sell the 28-80/2.8-4L.

Trying to "rationalize" my lens kit to a minimum kit that I really use. As a former pro, the 2 "must have" lenses for me are:

24-70 2.8 II and 70-200 2.8 II

Those 2 lenses will always be in my kit. They are like permanent "niches" that need to be filled. Most of the following are similar. They are basic niches. The specific lenses will get upgraded as better versions come out, like the new 16-35 4.0 IS.

I also own a f/ 4.0 kit, especially because that 70-200 is so big and heavy. What I happen to have is:

17-40 4.0 and 70-200 4.0

I haven't upgraded the 17-40 to the excellent 16-35 4.0 IS, because I have barely used the 17-40 5-10 times in 10 years.

If you don't shoot wide, I'd definitely recommend the

24-105 4.0 IS and 70-200 4.0 IS

That is a high quality, versatile pair for every day shooting. Then pull out the 2.8's for events. I consider those sort of "permanent niches" too. I have had those lenses for 10 years.

Otherwise the triple kit:

16-35 4.0 IS, 24-105 4.0 IS, 70-200 4.0 IS

I also have the Sigma 35 1.4 Art and Sigma 85 1.4. I had the Canon 85 1.2 before.

Until the Sigma 85 comes out in an Art version, or Canon updates the 85, you might buy a Sigma 50 1.4 Art or Canon 85 1.8 instead.

I went from 15+ L lenses plus 5 other lenses to that kit that pretty much covers everything that I really shoot.

If you need long, you might add a Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS plus 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. If you need tilt shift, one of those specialized lenses. If you need wide and fast (the reason for the 1.4 primes), maybe the 24 1.4.

ETA: I know that you probably can't afford to pop for that whole kit, or probably justify the whole thing. What is important to me is that each lens is sort of the "best" for each role. And the roles are the same, so there is no question about changing or churning.

That kit works for me for the long term.

Good luck!

28-80L is one of my all time favorite studio lenses. Loved the colors, sharpness and overall IQ. If I were to use a lens only in studio, I would keep the 28-80.
The 24-105L is just an excellent all-arounder, solid IQ, IS is quite handy and the extra reach is appreciated.

For me, I would sell the 28-80. Good luck
