That's a nice behavioral series Eric. I actually witnessed and photographed very similar behavior in a night heron rookery this summer. When the adults fly in, the chicks would grab the parent's beaks in an attempt to get fed. Sometimes the adult would regurgitate fish/crabs down an individual chick's throat, but usually only if it was alone. When several chick's were left alone, they'd grab each other's beaks in an attempt to be fed by the other one. At least that's what I had thought. Are those juvenile little blue herons ?
