I am really struggling making a decision. I currently own a D7100, Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 and the new Sigma 24-105.
I am headed to the balloon festival in NM and have been very interested in buying a full frame and a very good wide angle.
I am thinking about buying a D800 used off this site, 16-35 f/4 and the Samyang/Rokinon 14 f/2.8 (stars at night).
Do you think this is a good idea or a waste of money?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Brad

The NM balloon festival deserves your that much waste of money.
You can always re-sell them once you are done ;-)

Does make it easier to justify and I am really looking forward to it..
I am also going to travel in the area for 3 days beforehand.

Do it!

You will look back and smile. Maybe a 14-24?

I thought about the 14-24 which would save the need for the Samyang/Rokinon, but lack of a ND filter for landscapes is an issue with that lens. Agree?

I'd get the D800/14-24. I don't use filters much, so it doesn't bother me at all. I'm not a full time pro landscape shooter

Tokina 11-16 and save a lot of money. On the D7100 it'll be a as much of an upgrade as the 16-35 on the D800 IMHO.

If you're going D800, spend the cash and get at least the 14-24 if you're a wide-angle shooter, the 16-35's not going to be nearly as much of an upgrade over the 10-20 on the already very high resolution D7100.

The d7100 is enough pixels and pretty sharp, so that has been my quandary about buying the d800.

Its tough to justify the 14-24 at $1500 used, 2000 new where the 16-35 seems to rate as high when it comes to sharpness and is between 850-1400.

I am really struggling with this decision… ugh!

I looked up the Tokina, pretty mixed reviews...

The Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 is excellent. I've sold a number of images from it. It's especially good on a D7100. It's wide, fast, and because it's only a 1.5x zoom it's very sharp with low distortion. Rmember there is the original version and the newer with AFS. At any rate, I would NOT buy a D800 and then stick cheap lenses on it. What's the point? The Tokina is a much better lens than the Rokinon.

Something else of note… Another reason for dilemma and seriously considering buying the d800 and 16-35.
I rented the d800 and 16-35 this past weekend and used it at the Red Bull Rallycross at Daytona.
The d800 really performed well with my 70-200 f/2.8 VR for the action shots, VERY sharp combination. I used the 16-35 in the pits and they looked really good.

I also own a 300 f/4 but it is at Nikon with my d7100 and 1.4x tele, the 3 in combination won't focus. Independently they work fine and this is within 90 days of getting repaired back in June.

good point regarding the Tokina vs the Rokinon…

Would you suggest putting the 11-16 or the FX version, 16-28, on the d800?

The primary use is the f/2.8 for stars at night when I am in NM for 9 days.
There are other times that I get away from city lights and would like to shoot the night sky.

Hey Brad,

One word of caution... sometimes too much advice is like too many chefs in the kitchen...

Your original thought, was perfect. A great upgrade all around. And since your focus is on landscape, when someone doesn't really shoot landscapes is giving you advice, also take that then with a grain of salt.

I have shot landscapes with the D800 and the 16-35mm for years, a totally awesome combination, and as you said an easy way to use ND's, and also polarizers which are a stable for landscape photography. Myself, I had added the 14mm Samyang and loved it. A perfect little lens, well worth the money, and way better than any Tokina.

I did exchange my 14mm Samyang for the Nikon 14-24mm last year. For as good as the Samyang is, there is no doubt as to how great the 14-24mm is. But it comes at a hefty price too. So I now have both the 16-35mm and the 14-24mm, and I use them both, they both have their purposes, but I do use the 16-35mm a little more than the 14-24mm. And if I had to have just one, I would still just have the 16-35mm, and I would get the 14mm Samyang again.

I hope that helps. I know my voice is just one among many here, but I do believe your initial thoughts were correct, so stay with it. As nice as the D7100 is, it is no where in the league of the D800.

Jim

I shoot landscapes and the 14-24 is the only lens I have and have been happy with it so far. I used to have a Sammy 14mm. I went from D700 to D600 as well

There are mixed reviews on every lens.... The 11-16 is as clogs to perfect as a lens can get! My only quam was the range kinda sucked...wish it went to 35mm equiv, instead of 24....

Hasn't been an issue for me, though I can see how some might find it frustrating. See my post below, but I have used Jim's approach to dealing with it (16-35).

This is my current landscape setup as well. I used to always use the 14-24 and saw little need for anything else, but I picked up the 16-35 f/4 specifically to address the filter issue (the 15mm Zeiss was a close second, but could not justify the added expense at the time). Slowly but surely, the 16-35 has crept its way forward into being a primary landscape optic for me, even though I will always retain the 14-24 for night-sky photography (plus, my wife won't let me sell it).

I thought about it, the 12 day rental period for a body, 2 lenses and to purchase mounting plate would not be cheap. I travel when I can, shoot quite a bit of landscapes, panos, HDR, nature and would like to have a full frame and better glass. At worst, better glass on the wide side for the d7100. Not wild about the 10-20, it's just OK.
