This is the third copy of this lens that I have tried. The first two would not AF in AI Servo mode. This one works properly and will AF with a Kenko 1.4x TC on my 1D4.

Most of these are about 50% crops. The 4th shot is with the Kenko 1.4x TC. Note that it does not report the correct f-stop or focal-length in the EXIF.

AF for BIF shots is so-so. At 600mm, shots to not appear as sharp as those with my bare 400 f5.6. With a 1.4x on my 400, they are pretty close.

For the price, still the best buy for a zoom lens giving this focal-length range IMO.

Lens was ordered from Vistek in Toronto on Aug. 14 and arrived on Aug. 22. Serial #0161xx

This is an interesting development Tony, I really thought you had your fill on the first two copies. Can we assume the focus speed with the 1.4 is substantially impacted (slower)?

Tony, I know how critical you are and your post processing skills. these are not up to your usual high quality posts in my opinion. I have certainly seen better images posted by you with the 400 5.6 and 1.4x extender.
Yet the reach is impressive without a doubt, and great bang for the buck.

Third time lucky, eh? Yes, AF speed a low slower with TC.

My feeling exactly. Of course nice not to have to be putting on and taking off a TC.

Have a gimped foot (plantar fasciitis) at moment, so hopefully may get some better images in a few days.

Second set shows better IMHO. The exif on the last shot shows 300 f/4?? Nice results regardless.

I feel bad for a working guy that gets that lens now believing he will get shots like that.

Sorry, forgot that I had to put the 300 f4 on due to lack of enough light. Removed it.

So...the big question is, now that you've used one that autofocuses correctly, are you going to keep it or no?

Good to see you back with the lens. Good Luck!! Lovely First shots.

IMO, it's good to have 600mm on this lens for some situations... but the sweet spot of the lens (at the long end with two copies I tried) is 500mm at F7.1 (or F8). I taped it at 500mm on my 7D 500mm@F7.1 is definitely as sharp (if not sharper) as the 400 5.6 with 1.4x combo. Also 500mm @F7.1 is sharper than 600mm even at F11 (but you get more pixel on the subject with 600mm ).
Review

Overtime you will also notice the dust ( front element ) inside the lens and zoom creep

Also looking forward to Canon 7D II and how it will perform with this lens .

Thanks, Jeff. Imagemaster was simply a catchy name I picked for my business about 20 years ago, and has nothing to do with my photo abilities. Quite often that is more like Imagedisaster.
