the bottom corners are not really representative, as in all fairness, I am not focusing a bit far for my 5 foot tripod to have good focus even at f8 in the near corners, but it is still evident that tamron turns in a very good performance.

As much as I don't do such pixel peeping tests myself (anymore ), you've done a superb job and I have looked at it with great interest (esp. since I have most of the lenses you used, and I concur with your findings!)

Well done, and thanks for your time!

Thanks,

I am still considering to go full frame, currently quite happy though with 7d/17-55 2.8 combo.

The 24-70 II 2.8 seems the star performer, but it's very expensive. Tamron 24-70 2.8 looks good optically, but I have had nothing but focus issues with the simga 17-50 and tamron 17-50 2.8 on APS-C so no more third party lenses for me.

Thank you for spending the time to do these interesting tests. Canon is certainly on the ball with many of their latest lenses.

Thanks for putting that all together. The 24 tse look surprisingly weak. All the others seem about right. The 24-70II is most impressive.

thaniks. the 24 tse was front focused. I repeated it only against the 24-70 2.8L II. they are indeed very close, with tse doing a bit better in the closer range in the corners, the zoom a little in the far corner. I posted it on first page. here is the link

Thanks you for doing the tests!

Roger Cicala also found the 24-70 2.8 II better at 2.8 than the 24 TS-E at 3.5. I don't think your first results are an anomoly:

"The resolution absolutely, positively kicks butt and takes names. It is way better than the lens it replaces.

* Itís better at 70mm than the best Canon zoom I know of, the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.

* Itís even better at 24mm than the sharpest 24mm prime we have, the Canon 24 TS-E. In the center, in the corners, it doesnít care. We only had 5 copies to test, but they were all very similar with little copy-to-copy variation.

Thanks for the tests. Was contemplating if I should replace my (unusually good) copy of 24-105 f/4 with the 24-70 f/4 lens. Looks like that may not be so worthwhile after all.

Regarding the Tamron 24-70, as others have already pointed out, one needs to go through multiple copies before a good one can be found. It's that or the less-than-stellar AF accuracy on Canon bodies.

I will be selling the 24-70 f4 is. In all fairness, it is certainly better than 24-105 in the corners, even at f11, and has less distortion. It also has the macro which is nice. however, I dont see myself ever travelling with that lens alone for landscape or any other reason. the 16-35f4 covers the wide range, and 24-105 is quite good from 35 on. at least a good copy of it.

Also, I did have a 24-105 which I purchased used as a part of 5d package. I got my current lens with intent to sell it as part of package, but it was a fair bit better than the old one. So I fully believe many people that complain about the lens. Bad copies are out there.

As for tamron, I am on my 6th copy. Crazy. this one is a golden copy, sent to me by tamron, when they had my camera and tested it with it. all the other ones had combination of decentering and focus issues.
