Would anyone please confirm this. I saw the late version EF 500 f4 IS II on sale here , my question to the seller
would he give me the date code. I thought that will confirm the build date, the answer was only older lenses have this
and he contacted Canon Australia and got that info.
Some of my lenses have the code all my L lenses have it, did Canon change this.

They no longer have date codes... My 300 f/2.8 II does not, either.

When I say they don't have them anymore, any recently redesigned or new "L" does not. Existing lenses still carry the date code. For example, the 70-200 II no longer does, the 16-35 f/4 IS, all the new super-tele's, etc... But if you bought a brand new 35L or 135L for example, it still has the classic code.

The new lenses however have the serial number which is the new date code... If you google this, you can find the key for figuring it out.

Yes. Canon did change this. Many (maybe all by now) new Canon lenses don't have a date code any more. Even the old-design 85/1.8 that I bought new last year doesn't have a date code.

The 500/4 II is a relatively new lens, so that is normal.
Lenses are not like milk so I'm glad that Canon did away with the date code nonsense.

The 500 F4.0 L IS II that I have for sale on this forum, does not have a date code, but I purchased it new in December 2013.

Couldn't agree more. Silly date code has nothing to do with how the lens was used or possibly abused.

My 16-35L/II that I bought the day that it came out in 2007 doesn't have a date code. Which is confusing now that I'm trying to sell it

I don't believe the Canon 85 f1.8 has ever had a date code as it is not an L series. Correct me if I'm wrong, but date codes when applied were only applied to L series lenses.
From my experience, if Canon replaces the rear mount on an L series that had a date code the new mount will not have a date code.

Interesting. You're probably right. I don't have many non-L, Canon lenses.

Thank you all for your replies, I must say Canon no longer has the date stamp is a surprise.
In this case it would have been helpful, the issue was the Ebay seller Mervyn1976 said he no longer has
the purchase documents but stated the lens is just two years old. I thought if correct it may still has
some warrantee. The date stamp would have established this.
Asking price is $ 7500.00 he stated there will be no shipping , no problem for me since I live in Melbourne as well.
I lost interest on account of the rather vague description and missing papers.
I have been looking at some offers here , the problem is importing goods above $ 1000.00 has tax plus import duties and customs charges also time delays.
I have since placed an order with my local dealer Croydon Camerahouse , actually the price is better than from B&H
Again many thank's, Manfred

That lens has only been available for general sale since mid-2012, so it can't be much older than two years.

Dare I ask if there is any negative reason that you are dumping the lens? I am thinking about buying one to lighten the load, etc.
