p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Upgrade path from 400 5.6

For birding, perhaps other wildlife,

I have a 6d/ 400 5.6 setup. On the side is a 80-200 that isn't seeing use right now.

I am thinking that I will not use money to buy 1d3/1d4 bodies, but rather go the path of

6d+400/5.6
-> 6d, 7d+400/5.6
-> 7d+300/2.8 IS i+1.4xTC/2xTC, 6d+400/5.6 OR perhaps 7d+80-200, 6d+300/2.8 IS i +2xTC

I'm thinking this because the 500/4, 600/4 are a tad expensive, and while a used 400/2.8 is would be great it's a bit heavy and I don't think I need 800mm yet.

Speaking in terms of money, each of these upgrades cost $700, $3500 each which should be spread over at least 2 years.

I'd rather not drop $5k+ on 500 or 600mms, and also don't think the 400/2.8 is necessary when 800mm is not in need.

Question: What other upgrade routes do you see with a $5000 budget cap over 2 years?
Question: Which mixup of bodies/lenses would you use with 6d, 7d, 80-200/2.8, 400/5.6, 300/2.8, 1.4xTC, 2.0xTC?

If you are looking for reach the Tamron 150-600 might do. If you want a fast aperture lens it will not.

The canon 7D, 300/2.8IS and 2x TC combination yields fabulous results.

Wide open, 600mm, 7D

That being said, you really see a large difference when going from the 300 to either version of the 500. Save up for a while longer, and get a 500. OR get the 300/2x combo as a gap filler while you save up more for a 500.

You might try to find a good copy of the 500 F4.5L no-is. It's old, and Canon no longer supports it, but it's very sharp and could be had for $3K + ~ Ron

Even though I got some awesome shots with a 300mm 2.8 (version I) + 2x tc, I strongly suggest on skipping this combo and go straight to 500mm… I found focus acquisition and tracking a little bit to slow on my 7D back in the day. Even with a large birds as Bald Eagles in-flight…
Do not even think about it and go straight for 500mm. With a 1.4x it will give you 700mm and with a 2x 1000mm… There is never "too much" lens for birds

I saw good deals in range $5000-$5500 for a 500mm lens here on FM not too long ago…

I've seen pretty good results from that new Tamron 150-600 lens as well… (mostly portrait shots)

________
But he has the 6D, not 7D. Get a used 300/2.8 IS + 2x III. Still cheaper than a used 500mm/f4.
