Garden is seeing some glorious butterflies lately.

The poem below the pictures is by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

As always your comments, nits and suggestions are most helpful and appreciated.

Hope you enjoy and thank you for looking

Birdie

Happiness is like a butterfly

  NIKON D800    500mm    f/8.0    1/1250s    1250 ISO    +0.3 EV

Which when pursued

  NIKON D800    105mm    f/13.0    1/1250s    3200 ISO    0.0 EV

is always just beyond your grasp, but which

  NIKON D800    105mm    f/13.0    1/1250s    1000 ISO    0.0 EV

If you sit down quietly may alight upon you.

If only it was so easy we might still have Robin Williams with us...your images however continue to be wonderful and in their own way convey both happiness and freedom.

This set you captured, with its poetry... is superlative! Isn't Hawthorne's poem the utter truth.

I've never found an explanation for why these animals are not sexually dimorphic (never mind a viable explanation). There is no scientific explanation for why they are so delicately beautiful. IMHO, butterflies were created.......just for the pleasure of looking at them.

Depression and mental illness is certainly something that we as a society need to be more aware of and willing to discuss. It is a tragedy that strikes far too many and their families.

Thanks so much Ron. My 300mm is in the shop for repairs and the the 500 is too heavy for me to run around the yard with. So, I was left with the 105, not my favorite for these types of shots.

I did send you a PM. My process or lack of process does vary from image to image, but generally this is what I do.

I have a few general steps to my processing, but each image may be done just a bit differently .

Generally do then following:

Open in Lightroom and do any needed adjustments to the raw file- correct exposure, pull down highlights , bring up shadows , etc. I do not use Lightroom noise reduction or sharpening, so I change those sliders to 0. Next I -

Go to Photoshop and do then following-

Crop

Noise reduction using Topaz DeNoise. I either select the background only or do on layer and erase the noise reduction on the subject if it is not needed. I find that in some cases selecting the background only and the doing the noise reduction appears to give more separation of the subject from the background.

Crop out any distracting elements I don't want in the photo. Some are not okay with cropping out things, but I am not one of them

If I am gong to blur the background I do it at this point. Select background only , go filters-blur- and generally use the one called field blur.

Now, is where I use some of the plugins if I am going to use them. There are a couple that I use most often and on most photos.

Topaz Labs -- Plugin called Clarity

OnOneSoftware -- Plugin called PerfectEffects 8. I do not have the entire Perfects Effects Suite, just the one called Perfect Effects 8.

I find I use PE8 quite a bit. It allows you to make many adjustments and all kinds of options, but on selected areas of the photo if you wish.

Then back to Photoshop for resizing and sharpening. For this I use another plug in by Steve Perry

Sharpen and Resize

I don't know if this answered your questions or not? I hope it helps some. Any questions just let me know . My process or rather lack of one is really a miss match from lots of help and suggestions from several on this forum to whom I am most grateful. It is always a work in progress .
