These Carpenter Ants are exchanging food, that much I know. Not sure if they are also exchanging information on where to find it.

Tech Specs: Canon 1D Mark III (F14, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (3x) + a diffused MT-24EX. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Nice! And beautifully diffused light

At 3x, how do you hold the lens steady enough to get the critical area in focus?

They were on some tile and I was resting my left hand on it (had that hand under the lens). So both the camera and the subject were on the same "platform" -a trick I use in just about every shot. Even when you see me shoot a critter on a flower I'm holding the flower's stem in my left hand...

A moment of tenderness!

I also sometimes grip the flower stem. I recently learned that it is not always the answer.

I can't remember exactly which insect it was but it was one I hadn't photographed before and every time I gripped the stem (several attempts, well down below the flower) it seemed to detect it and flew off. It was not the approach of my hand, only the moment of taking hold.

Thanks Harold and Daryl, and grazia Alessandra

I had enough time for just one frame.

Great job capturing a difficult to shoot scene, trophollaxis can be quite a challenge and as you mentioned the action doesn't last long and at this magnification they can be easily disturbed, so you did very well here.

Thanks folks

Actually Lee shooting hand held is, IMHO, the only way to get frames like this one. The event happens so fast that a tripod / focusing rail would just be too slow.
