p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Cleaning flood damaged slides

I’m hoping someone can offer some good experience on some techniques for cleaning Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides that have been flood damaged.

A friend has about 2,000 slides (almost all in paper mounts) that were in a basement flood more than a decade ago. In retirement, he now wants to clean away the water stains (and in some cases mud) so he can digitize them. Fortunately, they were all in Carousels so no “unsticking” is required.

I’m also hoping …maybe a bit too optimistically…that in addition to single slide cleaning techniques, someone has had some luck with creating a batch process.

Thanks.

While I am not too hopeful of the results, Kodak has a publication on the "Preservation of photographs" that should be a big help. I am sure you can improve the images, but i don't know if you can completely save them. Maybe do what you can, then digitize and go to Photoshop.
