p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Recommend a good / cheap wide for FX

Hi,

My photog interest has picked up as of late, so I'd like some recommendations for a good wide / wide zoom lens for FX. I had the Tokina 12-24 for DX, but sold it to help get a D610. I really miss that lens. Maybe was the most used I had. Now the widest I have is a 35. So I want a good replacement for the 12-24. Any suggestions?

The widest rectilinear lens for a full frame camera is the Sigma 12-24. There are a couple for sale in the classifieds, one is the version 1 and the other is the version 2 (I'm selling the version 2). At 12mm, you get about 120 degrees of coverage, which is pretty wild to see through the viewfinder. Stopped down, the lens offers darn good corner-to-corner sharpness.

If you're into primes, the Samyang/Bower/Rokinon 14/2.8 is an excellent lens for about $300.

Rumours are Sigma is going to release a 14-24mm F4 with 82mm threads at photokina. Not sure if you can wait that long...

Cheap, would be in the range of the 12-24 I had, and wide, the same. I'd guess that a 12-24 on full frame camera would be really wide. The Rokinon 14 sounds interesting. I briefly had the rokinon 8mm, which was a cool lens. But again 14 on FX might be too much.

Tamron 17-35 2.8-4, Rokinon 14 2.8, Nikon 18-35g. I have settled for the Rokinon 14 2.8 for UWA stuff and the sigma 35 1.4 for more normal wide photog. It doesn't get any better even with no price considerations

I recommend the Nikkor 18mm 3.5 AIS. Great quality and impressive on the D600 with nice straight lines.

I've been using an old Nikon 24/2.8 AF-D a bit recently, a bit mushy in the corners but I'm making plenty of pictures I'm happy with, that's on a D800E and a D3s.

Gotta go with the recommendation for the 18-35G AF-S. it's excellent, covers exactly the same range as your Tokina 12-24 did and is moderately inexpensive.

Having owned the KM 17-35 f2.8-4, its Tamron twin is also a good option, it's a massively underrated lens and a very solid performer.

Ray, nice, I am book marking as the N18 may be just what I need.

I went with the 18-35G and agree with previous recommendations. I wouldn't go so far to call it cheap, but I think the lens easily performs up to and beyond its price point.

Tokina has a 17-35/4 FX lens which is just under $500
