p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Because it's LLWS time...

I decided to post some more from the end of my first season shooting youth baseball (this game was at the end of June). I think I've improved some since I started and I was trying to look for some good expressions in addition to pure action. All said, I still need to get a better feel for the pace of these games, how to predict the action, time my shots better for ball in frame, etc. As always, any CC, feedback, advice, etc. is greatly appreciated! Let me know if you want exif info on any of these. Thanks!

These are from the only inter-league game I was able to shoot:

I was fortunate with the light at a certain point

This one actually connected with my lens. Gotta work on my whole-body reaction time in addition to my trigger finger.

1... not crazy about the timing on this one. The expression is okay, but it's clearly a ball pounded into the ground.

2... Since we have no ball and going for expression, a waist high tight crop would work best. Looking to get the face to fill the frame.

3... Doesn't work for me.

4... Just okay. If going for the in game portrait, be conscious of EVERY detail. The break in the background wrap on the fence is distracting.

5... Light is great. Expression, timing... not so much so.

6,7... I get what you are trying to do. Pitches in the dirt, chin music shots, hops and skips, even hit by pitches, are all photos that I see a lot of newbies post on FM. To be truthful, none of it ever impresses me.

8... I like it but wish the BG was better.

9... Along with #12, your best shot. Tight horizontal would work better. That tear in the BG wrap, like in the first shot bothers me though.

10... Again, go tight vertical. Rule of thumb... if expression is what you are going for and the legs are not contributing the the impact, then get rid of them.

11... No

12... More like this. Shoot with this mentality on EVERY shot.

13... Since there is no play being made, go tight horizontal and make it about the kid.

14... Nothing special here.

15... My third favorite. I would crop it a little differently, but overall has all the elements we are looking for... nice lighting, clean BG, tight on subject.

Hope this helps...

Whoa, so a month went by without me realizing you guys had commented. I thought I set "email notification" on and didn't bother checking back since I got no emails...but I guess I mis-clicked. First off, Paul, thank you for taking the time to reply when I'm sure you were insanely busy with LLWS stuff. The feedback definitely helps. I guess the hops and whatnot is just me going through my newbie rite of passage - hopefully by next season I'll have it all out of my system ;-)

That tear in the BG wrap annoys the heck out of me too but I'm not sure what I can do with distracting backgrounds at this particular field. While they gave me access to the field (parents are all watching from behind the fences), they also gave very specific constraints on where I could be. Is it something I should try cloning out in PS? I may have to save up for something that can go to 400mm or maybe try a tele-extender kind of thing for next season.

Also, thanks cw for your kind comment.
