Subject was my daughter playing in the yard.

Lovely, engaging smile - better take your vitamins Dad!

My preference is #1. I like the spontaneity, wonderful natural wisps of hair, and of course her smile. While she communicates her enjoying the moment, I think eye contact would substantially improve.

Technically it is much better than #2 re focus and processing, IMO. If we could take the technique of #1 and embed her direct smile of #2 you'd have the best of all worlds.

Overall, the posts (4x4?), given the relative size, visually distract from the subject as does the large white background area in #1.

In this case the de-saturation works, I suspect the full color version is rather bold visually.

She appears to be a very willing subject - shoot away! Thanks for sharing.

My 2¢,

Bob

#1 is really nice.
Hope you don't mind that I played around with layers to try to create some background instead of the white area. Very rough job for sure... probably not the greatest selected area to be the new background, but worth experimenting with

I like them both for the candids of a great subject. I don't get desaturation or softness, so I will let others speak of that. I agree that it would be best to avoid the white background. I like Farmer Johns redo.

I like 1 because more of her face is showing. I like 2 because she is making eye contact, but some of her face is cut off. Having said that, 2 is my favorite.

Thanks for the critiques and comments! I will play with the background a bit later and try to post a follow up update some time later this weekend.

I quite like the brilliant smile of number 2.

I'm not fond of the muted color treatment of the amount of negative because I don't feel they add much to the message. Consider cropping.
