p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Is 70-200 necessary???

I am about to shoot my first low key wedding. Is a backyard wedding. So, no church or large hall. In a house and in the backyard. I am in the process trying to figure what to rent and what lens I should need. I have enough experiences shooting paid gigs (corporate events and fund raising stuff). When I switched to Nikon few months ago, I downgraded my gear a lot. So now, all I have is 1 Nikon D7000. Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS. Nikon AF D 28-105 f3.5-4.5. Yongnuo 560iii flash. I am going to rent another D7000 and maybe another SB700. I want something longer on a DX body but not sure if I should rent a 70-200 or a 85. Is cheaper to rent a 85 1.8 AF S than the 70-200 f2.8 vr or F4 with vr.

You definitely don't *need* one. It's just a matter of preference, but the longest lens I've had for a while is an 85, although I'm just now in the process for trading it for a 180. Especially for a backyard wedding, I think you could get away with what you already have. Your 28-105 is plenty long on a DX camera IMO. 17-50 on one D7000, 28-105 on the other.

That is probably a matter of shooting style more than anything. Depending on available light, that f/1.8 might be nice--though I guess with the VR on the 70-200 you would be about the same-ish. It would probably be a good idea to play with any equipment you plan to use for this small wedding beforehand, so maybe rent an 85 for,a day and feel it out in similar conditions.

might not even pull mine out if the backyard was small.

a 35 1.8 DX for low light and/or an 85 1.8 or 50 1.8 for portraits might make interesting additions

Thats the one lens I still rent because I dont use it enough to own. That said. I do use every wedding for the ceremony, I like to be stealth. My go to is the 24-70 for most event shooting.

Im only a 10-15 a year wedding shooter though, I just have the rental fee rolled in to my cost. For me personally its better to rent over buy at its price point and my usage.

I rent local now but I used to rent from lenrentals, I thought they had better pricing than others. They also have wedding bundles you can rent.

+1 for it being a matter of shooting style. I love the compression of the 70-200 at 200. I couldn't imagine shooting a wedding without it. It's my go to lens most of the day.

Should be able to shoot the entire thing with the 17-50 on a crop body to be honest. I wouldn't even bother renting another flash for a backyard wedding.

I think my first wedding was shot mostly with 17-50 on crop. Not a lot you can't capture with it.

As for 70-200, as mentioned, it's a personal thing. Love or hate. Sometimes a logistical consideration too. You don't need one though, no.

That's good to know.

I suffer from some gear limitations as well. Pretty much two diggie bodies (own one/rent one) and a film body matching 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm is how I roll.

I have a small wedding in October and plan to break out a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 that I normally use for sports...

A first for me at a wedding (Logistics mainly), but it's my favorite lens of all time and I can make her sing. It's at a country club bordering a beach so lots of room to stretch out.

It is solely a personal decision. Can you live without a 70-200?

Yep, I agree that you could probably shoot the entire thing with the two lenses you have, and probably even just with the 17-50.

If anything, I'd rent a prime in case the light is lower in the house, or in case some of the backgrounds aren't ideal and you want to blur them out. You'll find more use for that than a 70-200 in this instance

I honestly only use this lens for three things, if I even need to:

-Ceremony (when limited by the little old church lady)
-Family portraits (for big groups so I can still shoot at f/5.6 and slay the background)
-Toasts

That's about it.

I guess I'm at the opposite end since the 24/1.4G is my go-to lens for most of the day.

I have bought and sold the 70-200 multiple times. I keep thinking that I NEED that 200mm length. But after lugging it around wedding after wedding I fall out of love with it and go back to my 135. Its very rare I need anything longer than that.
