I shoot a ton of night football. I have a 5d3 & an "X"... Flash helps even the color balance in most situations. I've shot in a wide variety of venues, from nice D-1 College stadiums with "TV" lights, to a high school field with lit with 10 construction light sets on trailers... Here in Nor Cal, on the typical high school field, I'll run high ISO, generally 8-10k; then use the flash on ETTL (I use a 600EX RT & ST-E3, but it is easily done with an off-camera cord) on a super clamp down low on the monopod. Put the flash on high speed sync, at -1 for a "puff" of light for color. Cycling lights are a pain in all but the best venues. Flash is your friend in these cases unless you want to spin yourself in the dirt post processing... I can throw light a surprising distance using this technique.
You've gotta to get the flash as far away from the lens axis as possible to avoid zombie/red-eye...
