At least with theft/missing packages, UPS will pay out.

I have had poor luck with claims for plain old damaged items.

I had USPS dent a computer that I sold on this site. The repair was $550. Over 3 months after filing the claim, I'm still waiting for them to pay. I had insurance, but it seems pretty worthless. I will not be shipping any high ticket items via USPS ever again.

Is there any reason not to have shipping insurance, other than to save a few $ on an unimportant item?

I hope you have better luck with UPS or FedEx. I sure haven't.

Getting money from Canada Post is like getting blood from a stone...I am curious to see how this is resolved.

I wonder if Lens Rentals' own business or contents insurance would cover this if Canada Post doesn't (I doubt they will).

The postal employees bank account needs to be scrutinized. As well as their photography portfolio, which might demonstrate the sudden appearance of birds in flight.

Use a third party insurer like U-pic. As long as you have everything documented correctly, they will usually pay out in a timely manner. Sometimes it is annoying because they ask for the same information twice but you will usually get paid within three weeks or less. Lower insurance rates. The claims process is done on the web and via uploading scans of any required documents. They are not perfect by any means but they are light years ahead of the insurance department at most shippers.

I have no affiliation with the company other than as a user of their services.

Here's my rule of thumb:

small items AND cheap = USPS first class, no insurance
small items and expensive = Fedex (with stated value, kinda like insurance)
big items and cheap = USPS parcel post
big items and medium to expensive = Fedex

I never use UPS! expensive with crappy service

Where I live, the order of preference is different. I have not personally had to recover the charge for a damaged package, so cannot speak to that. However, we receive a higher percentage of damaged boxes from FedEx as compared to UPS. I try to avoid the USPS altogether for shipping packages, if I can. This year, two packages sent to us never arrived. Another was sent back and forth across the country a few times before it finally arrived. Their tracking is a joke too. It is also not uncommon to receive shredded items in the mail that come in a plastic sleeve with a USPS note saying "sorry".
