p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · We're building a commercial studio... suggestions?

Hello friends.

A few coworkers and myself are getting together to build a studio in Southern California that will be available to rent. We've secured a 2800 square foot, 18ft ceiling fully AC'd warehouse (with bathrooms!) and we've got a sizable budget to add features and equipment. We're looking for suggestions, so any ideas would be epic. Here are a few things we've got down (comments on these specifically would be awesome)

1. 2 bathrooms
2. A small kitchen
3. A small dressing room
4. A big sound system
5. 6 heads on stands with wheels and lots of modifiers - included in the fee
6. A lounge
7. Wifi

What are some features you love in studios? What makes you want to go back? What are normal rates (please include your area/market as well) for the studio you go to?

Seriously, any tips/wish list would be great!

ProCam in Livonia Michigan started at $25 per hour for space and $35 if they supply lighting equipment. I heard recently that they were now $50 per hour to rent. They have all kinds of track lighting as well as infinity corner walls. Numerous props and backgrounds. They even have a ramp from side street to bring in cars......

Photos from a workshop I took there last year....

1) Backdrop has to be a painted wall (with the curve)
2) Extra vinyl backdrops (at least black)
3) Professional grade lighting (if I rent a studio abroud I will always pick the Broncolor one).
4) Huge softoxes/octaboxes and umbrella's (I hate it when I rent a studio and see they only have 60x100 softboxes).
5) Big monitor on a rolling table has been something I have become accustomed to in the last few months. A 4K monitor is amazing for tethering and showing the images you just took.
6) Lighting in the studio that is dimable and daylight balanced (when working with kids and low power settings on your flashes there might be some spillage from the warehouselighting).
7) I hate railsystems, just use rolling lighting stands.

I could give a lot more, but the first 4 are a must for me. 5 and 6 are very welcome, but not essential.

PS: Forgot to add price.
A studio with the first 4 forfilled and of a decent size and your characteristics costs between 400 and 800 euro per day depending on the country (all within Europe). Hour rates would be around 100-200 euro. This is without taxes.

Where in So Cal are you going to be.

I made a nice list of things,expecting some sorot of dialog. After aall I have outfitted a couple studios.
But 3 weeks and not a peep from the OP.

Good luck...I hope you are using OPM

* A white cyc is a must-have
* Green/blue-screen tape and backdrops
* Plenty of C-stands, arms, clamps, and other grip
* Lots of power outlets and a robust electrical supply
* For people doing video work: continuous lighting, audio considerations
* I'd love to see more studios in the US with the latest Broncolor gear. Profoto seems to be the de-facto choice otherwise.
* Flags, V-cards, gels, expendables
* Some of the more "obscure" light modifiers (budget permitting)
