I will be in the San Luis Obispo County August 15th, August 19th. Looking to get some shots in while on my trip.

I was researching - Montana de Oro State Park and it looked the most interesting to me. Looking for more insights on this SP. The idea is to get some sunset shots, rocky beaches and flowy waters; maybe some wildlife as well I will be bringing my 14mm and my 400mm.

If ya'll have more spots, I would be happy to hear from ya.

Thanks.

Yea, MdO is just what you're expecting - rugged cliffs, waves, etc. Well worth a visit.

Also in the area:

Moro Bay State Park. Rent a canoe or kayak and paddle the estuary. See otters, seals, birds, etc.

A rather nice drive through the varied country: http://goo.gl/maps/A3D5E

Traveling north on Highway 1, will take you through the ranch lands and then into the more mountainous Big Sur area. IIRC, it takes about 4 hours (maybe less?) from SLO to the Monterey area although it's easy to make stops along the way. It can be foggy at times along the coast.

There are a lot of birds nesting on Moro Rock and I've seen a number of sea otters near the mouth of the bay, as well as seals and sea lions. Also it's not unusual to see deer and wild turkeys and lots of turkey vultures. I've heard that condors have spread into the area near San Simeon (and especially inland near Pinnacles National Park), Not sure about viewing or photography spots though.

Thanks Craig. I wont be able to travel upto Big Sur Area. I am sort of going to SLO and am stuck around that area for those couple of days. Morro Bay is where I am lodging, so should be fun

See if you can arrange to arrive in SLO a little early; the weekly farmer's market and street fair on the evening of Thursday the 14th is worth checking out.

Afternoon / evening hikes up San Luis Mountain or Bishop's Peak are fun and can produce great sunset shots in all directions. Access SLM from Laguna Lake Park http://goo.gl/maps/frLyz or from the north, parking on Luneta, Serrano or Tassajara roads, or from the east, using the parking lot at the end of Marsh St.

Bishop's peak is a straightforward hike from Foothill Blvd. http://goo.gl/maps/DBz8A

Sad to see the rampant development that has occurred since I left the area ~12 years ago. Pirate's Cove used to be a clothing optional beach, but is now just another high end cliff side subdivision. Shell Beach, Pismo Beach, etc. are now little more than Northern LA. If you want to get away, head north to Morro Bay or Cayucos, where you can still stroll the beach in relative isolation.

The hawks that next in Bishop's peak will do a fly-by to check you out as you hike up Bishop's peak. You need to be ready with that long lens. I had one come within 15 feet over my head.
