p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 1st Same-Sex Wedding for Me [29-ish]

This was a half-day civil ceremony at City Hall in SF and was my first time working with a same sex couple on their wedding day. There were a few things I wasn't quite sure how I would handle like the posing and then figuring out how to do their "first-look" but it actually all worked out pretty naturally and I was really happy with this set overall. Anyway, C&C is welcome as always.

18, umm yea that works. Yikes is that nice.

Looks like you had a bit of trouble with posing diversity at the end ? I have never seen a set from you with so much face to face even shoulders type stuff.

Thanks Joe--yeah you're right. It got a little repetitive at the end in this set. But I will say that these were pretty natural positions that they fell into more on their own. I'll look through and see if there's any other sets. But the other thing is we were literally only out under those trees for like 5 seconds waiting for a car to pull around and then at the pier for maybe 10 minutes while waiting for the sun to hide behind some of the clouds leaving us with about 10-30 second windows of shooting time. They only really wanted one good shot out at the bridge, so we didn't spend hardly any time out there. But not sure what you mean about "shoulders type stuff."?

I just meant that their whole body was parallel to each other. (as opposed to both heads facing, but one with the shoulders rotated towards the camera)

So obviously you deliver all of them (they are great), but how are you going to blog the end? Cut a few? Mix a few others in? diptych?

i'm going to revisit my culling. i think i have some alternates that will work in adding variety. sometimes i don't realize how repetitive a post can potentially be until i do a set like this and see it flow.

Duy, I really like these. I see your consistent style in the editing, and the posing, but the angles are definitely more straight forward. Not as much tilt. And I like that. The shots are also more straight forward, clean, and simple, which I also like. I know some will disagree with me here, but with the simple hotel rooms, and the simplistic beauty of downtown SF City Hall, I think this type of shooting definitely did very well for this wedding.

*thumbsup* from me.

Nice set, I think its challenging shooting in new ways at City Hall because so much has already been done there, but I've never seen the arch lit up and framed like that in the first one, really dig it. Good one to lead with.

Not as much a fan of 17, I think it would work better if the scene were brighter and upbeat (not sure if thats the right word for what I mean) but the dark scene with them facing away, body language and being so far apart I think it doesn't really lend itself to the typically loving wedding photos that couples like to see. Just my 2 cents, of course there will be those that love that shot as well.

Thanks for sharing

I like how it feels simple without a lot of PP work.

One thing: It feels like you really distanced yourself (did you shoot it only with a 35 prime, and maybe a 50 for a few?) as #s 4/5/28 were the closest you got to the couple. Did you shoot much tighter at all for their wedding? Or were there reasons why you prefer to not shoot tight?

Aside from that, they look happy, and that's the most important part.

Thanks Mike. I try to get a read on my clients and how comfortable they are being posey (like having fun as trying to be model-type poses) and how much they just want to enjoy their experience together. So I didn't do a lot of specific posing here and just gave general cues on where to stand and what direction generally to be pointed in for the good light. Other than that they were just really genuinely enjoying each other's company so it was more important for me to let them have that and photograph the authenticity of it than to "set them up." I think that's why this probably feels more on the simple side.

Thanks Steve--17 is a little forced, I think. But I showed them in the camera and they actually thought it was pretty cool. Could maybe use a little bit of brightening though.

Thanks man. I pretty much worked exclusively with 35/85 for this wedding. I did get more closer up shots. Again--not something I really notice until I post a set and people point it out--thanks for taking a look

Well, you nailed it, man. For sure. It definitely has a simple, intimate, and soft feel. It seems very fitting for these two.

Just revised the OP to include some alternates (designated "b") that I will probably end up using as additional or replacements for some shots based on feedback here.

Awesome set from a setting perfect for you. Really enjoyed this one, though in #26, with the trees, I want them shifted over to the left just a touch so they'd be right in the spot where the tree trunks converge visually on both sides.

Other than that, typically great stuff from you. Cheers!

What i found to be very interesting is that the posed shots with the couple seem to work well regardless of the fact that is a same sex couple. If it was a regular couple it would have the same effect, wich is not what i would imagine prior to viewing these images. Very nice set. Congrats.

Yep. Would have pushed it to be a little bit better. Also, how dare you critique me? You are dead to me. jk..

Working with them felt the same too, actually. I think their height difference made it a little easier for me to decide who to stand in the back vs front for some of the posed shots. Their interactions were primarily undirected as well, so it enabled me to just position them in the right spots and find the compositions from there.

Thanks! I though of doing that after their formal pictures. Thought it would be a fun photo for them to have.

I'm glad that you've saved this poor couple from receiving sub-par work from you by adding 26B. You've saved this entire set by that one deft move. ;-)

Thoughts on same-sexness of couple; I was also surprised that all the poses worked so well for them. Chalk it up to some sort of sexism (I prefer to think posing for same-sex couples is just unfamiliar to me), but I had thoughts about how it would be done and came up with nothing. Nice to see that the sincerity and warmth of interaction between any couple is an extremely strong determinant, if not the primary determinant, on how poses/posing works for them. Clearly this couple was very much together, so you made it all work beautifully.
