Congratulations to mitesh for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 12 votes - View Previous Winners

Had the pleasure of meeting up with two FMers, bipock (Brad) and dgdg (David) yesterday in OBX to shoot some black bears. Special thanks to Brad for showing me a few great shooting locations in the area- I'm sure I'll have to come back in the fall for waterfowl migration!

The day got off to a slow start, but activity picked up in the early evening when a sow and her two cubs ambled out of the woods for an early dinner. It was hot and sunny, and they took breaks from foraging to lie down in the cool mud or to splash a bit in the water.

Enough talking... here are the images :

Well, guess that leaves me to show what the morning was like. Pleasure to meet you and let me know when you come down for the waterfowl.

Seriously jealous of the cubs.

Very cool series, Mitesh. I think these are terrific shots. The cubs are just too cute. Was this at Pocosin Lakes?

Now that's a photo session...you see and get great pix of black bears and then cap it off with a super shot of the Milky Way. I would be smiling ear to ear after a weekend shoot like that.

Great bears! It was a great day once it cooled down a bit.
It was great to finally catch up. Hopefully I'll head down there again soon.
Your stars are tack sharp. You should post the core too even though the ground is blurry.

Lovely set Mitesh! Love #3. Saw a mom and cub while on a hike yesterday. My wife did not want me go near them. Lost opportunity. Nice start shot too.

, your invite must have gotten lost in the mail, Ron- I heard the Post Office is seriously in a shambles after a recent retirement

Let's set a plan for another trip down. I'm always up for more bears .

Thanks, Eric. Yeah, I was definitely happy with the opportunity and the volume of good images for one day. That said, I'm kicking myself over a few compositions that could have been so much better as well as a few shots that I know I missed. I guess it's all part of the process of becoming a better photographer...

Thanks for making it out on very short notice, David. It was a pleasure to meet up and thanks again for teaching me how to use the star tracker. I have a feeling I'll be sneaking out every clear night now on .

Thanks, Mike. It was so cool to watch the cubs interact and how the sow watched over them.

Thanks, Ken! Glad you were at least able to spot the sow and cub on your hike. I know exactly what you mean about wives and missing shots because they won't let you do something, . We were fortunate that these bears were comfortable with us and they chose to hang around close by. We definitely did not approach and we backed off whenever it looked like they needed space or approached our direction. I believe that is a big reason that they felt comfortable enough to hang around for 2 hours and let us shoot thousands of frames!
