Well, a 100-400 just popped up locally and I threw the guy a lowball offer which he accepted(!). Only a year old and barely used. The Tamron looks pretty damn good, but I think I'll wait until next summer and see how they are holding up; I should have no troubles reselling the 100-400 for at least what I paid if I should decide to try the Tamron later on.

If your primary concern is for hiking, the Canon is probably the best choice. The Tamron is not going to hold up to the abuse of packing on a long trail ober time. Especially if you do a lot of it.
I have both and the Tammy is no where near as well built. It is mostly plastic!
However, mine preforms very well. It has no focus issues or any other for that matter. It just is not a well built lens when compared to a Canon "L".
