p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A few hours in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York

I had a few hours to kill before a funeral on 7/21/2014 in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City -- so to relax I shot 5 rolls of 120 black and white film. Here are my ten favorites.

Automotive laborer taking a break in front of a car radiator recycling shop.

A man on hard times contemplating whether or not to put his tee shirt back on.

Nick, Greek, Vietnam Veteran, and has a suitcase full of old Exaktas and undeveloped color film.

Parking lot attendant relaxing in the shade.

Young man, beachgoer, and sand sculptor of comely, reclining, women of easy virtue.

And five more:

Free air, but vacuuming at the Hess will cost ya.

Ford Edsel

A basketball mannequin seemingly ready to pounce upon an old lady pushing a walker.

Two beachgoers in front of large, black, inflatable, monolith.

Friendly worker wearing a straw sombrero at Cropsey Metals recycling plant.

I find the basketball mannequin shot to be the most striking photo of the group. There is a lot of tension here, and visual interest. I'm prompted as a viewer to wonder what's going on: its not immediately apparent, but intriguing. The slight tilt probably adds to the off-balance feel of the shot and feeds the tension. The scoreboard-looking thing in the background plays off the mannequin effectively. Well done.

Honorable mention to 6 & 9.

Evan, interesting observations. What's funny to me, is that the mannequin shot above -- I have two interpretations of this shot -- the way I shot it, and not on purpose (because I didn't have much time), was tilted more. the one above I set to 2 CCW in PhotoShop image rotation. And I was debating which I preferred -- so when in doubt save it both ways. Anyways, I think I'll reconsider which to eventually include in one of my numerous Blurb books.

As for 6 -- that appeals to me too, and I'm still trying to figure out why. The scoreboard looking thing is actually for Nathan's hot dog eating contest.

Love NYC area..You see all kinds of uniqueness. I am wondering why the umbrella is up and he is not under it? Or does he have a "cold one" under it.
