p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Small things

Hello all. First two images are taken with D7000, 105mm macro, EXIF is under the images, VR-on, F/40, Flash with diffuser, Spot metering for TTL, Background was too busy, so I underexposed for the ambient light and just used TTL flash for the main object. Handheld.

I came up with this handheld macro idea on my own, but I'm sure many people used it. It's a combination of technology and "spay and pray" technique/ But works for me in 99% of the time when handheld or monopod only available.

1. AF-C with release in focus priority mode, Single point AF, Ch drive mode.

2. Roughly Frame and Focus on the object with AF-ON button.

3. Lean a little bit back with your upper body, firmly holding camera.

4. Half depress Focus release to activate VR if used.

5. As soon as ready, exhale, push the shutter release all way down and slowly start leaning your upper body toward the main object.

camera is ready for snapping pictures, but paused, as object still not in focus, As soon as object gets in focus, the action starts here, but I'm continue my slow motion forward until buffer is full or previously pre-set focus plane passes the object.

It require - I'll repeat the sequence. Then at home, I'll pick out the images, that hit the focus right. With flash as a main power, I do not need VR, but if I keep Shutter speed 1/320 and below - VR helps visually aim on the object.

Last two are taken as a casual snapshots with Sigma 50-500 OS, Handheld as well.
Thank you for looking
Vlad

Vlad,

An interesting technique and it seems logical. I use manual focus lenses so I can't try it myself.

Nice results. (I'm not keen of the bright flare).

I agree - direct flash on last two made them less appealing. Thanks
