p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Looking to add a new lens

Hi everyone, I'm in the market for a new wedding lens and I would really like your input. Here is my current line-up:

2-5d3
35 1.4 - My Fav
50 1.4 - Hardly use it, don't even bring it to weddings
85 1.2 - Love this beast
24-70 2.8 - Stays in the bag for the most part
70-200 2.8 - Nice but I'd rather use primes

I was thinking of adding 1 of these:
100 2.8L Macro
A fisheye - Not sure what length
24 1.4

Thanks for your help

A fisheye can be interesting, but of limited utility. For the wide end have you considered a 16-35 2.8 which would likely be used more frequently?

definitely a 16-35mm 2.8, but if it had to be either the 100mm or the fish-eye, I would take the 100mm... It will dramatically change the way your detail shots look.

In the past year I got the 100L macro (replacing nothing but just another addition) and 16-35 F/4 just recently (replacing the 17-40). Both very useful; you'll love the 100mm not just for macro but portrait shots too and a lighter alternative for the 70-200 when you want something just a bit longer than 85.

If 24 is wide enought then obviously the 16-35 doesn't do it for you, but it's an awesome wide angle lens.

24 is definitely wide enough. any wider and you'll just make your clients look like distorted clowns. the only real use for ultra wide lens are spiral stair shots, reaaaally far off landscape photos, and yeaa, staircase shots...

the 24L is nice... so is the 15 fish from sigma.
Actually the 15 fish is amazing from Sigma.

I am not sure if the 14L from canon is rectilinear or not... the sigma is not.

You can't go wrong with a 24L in the bag. For fishy, I'd go 15mm.

I agree with James. Given your current options of cameras and lenses I think you have things nicely balanced and covered effectively. I wouldn't waste money on gear. Tax deductible or not you are still paying for it at the end of the day. Put it into savings or into other areas of your business.

In general, I agree. I rarely used mine. However, I've seen others use them at every wedding. It really boils down to the photographer. Could I have found time at every wedding to use it? Sure, but I don't particularly want every wedding to have that type of image.

24Lii is your next lens. I like the 35, but honestly the 24 gets way more camera time. I love it.

I use fisheye a lot. It is my favorite dancing lens (when people start going crazy).

What about a nice MF lens?

Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8 ZF (ZE) (on Canon EOS) http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/470-zeiss_zf_21_28_5d

Just a thought.

Agree with keeping the money for marketing/other use. Either an UWA or A Tilt-shift if you really really had to.

You don't need a new lens... particularly when you are asking us to help you decide what you need.

Sell the 50mm 1.4. Sell the 70-200 2.8.

Buy the 135mm F2. I find that most of my 70-200 shots during ceremonies are usually in the 120-150 mark. Unfortunately, Nikon has an old 135mm lens. As soon as they release a 135mm Vr lens, my 70-200 goes up on the block.
