p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · How do we like the Vivitar Series 1 70-210 3.5?

I sold off my Nikkor glass a while ago. I held on to my 55/3.5 Micro Nikkor for the longest and after a year without it I'm regretting letting it go. I used it quite a bit with Olympus PENs and now my E-M5 and I know how great of a lens it is. The two lenses I wanted to replace were me 55 Micro Nikkor and my Nikkor Q 200 F/4. I love the build, I'm familiar with both, and I wand the Macro and the 200mm back. I've never used anything outside of Nikkor manual focus glass.

Browsing around the web I see that the 1st version Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f3.5 can be had pretty cheap. It will do 1:2.2 which is pretty darned close to the 1:2 of my Micro Nikkor. Gives me the flexibility of a zoom. Give me my 200mm. All of this in a single lens that's pretty cost effective. I'd love to hear some feedback from owners of the Vivitar, or better yet someone who has had the Nikkors and the Vivitar. You think I would be happy with the quality of the 70-210 Series 1 V1 over the two Nikkor lenses?

Vivitar 70-210 f3.5 series 1 is one great zoom macro lens. The push pull macro feature is very useful for handheld shot. It did replace all my L zoom since I mostly shoot L prime. Its IQ is a one big surprise for me.

I have the Vivitar 70-210 and also the Nikkor Q 200mm f4. The Nikkor is sharper at 200 of course but the Vivitar is quite good and gives the added benefit of zoom. It all depends on what camera you are using.

The 70-210 Series 1 is a cult classic and is quite the good performer.

Be sure you know which version you are getting, there's at least 5 version of varying designs.

The definitive info is here: http://www.robertstech.com/vivitar.htm

[first two links were online at Monaghan's Megasite, but it's been offline for many years...]

I owned the 70-210/2.8-4 Macro VMC [Komine] and 70-210/3.5 Macro VMC [Kino]. They were both very nice. I'm still not sure which one I preferred.

Great information. Thanks!

I'm looking at a Version 1 of the lens, the Kiron version.

I need to dig mine out. I have one in a closet somewhere. It was only Ok on m4/3, but I should try it on my a6000.

aperture element is adjustable. I did it on mine ...oh boy the lens is sharp compared to most prime I have.

I have the Version 2 model of the 70-210, made by Tokina. Very surprising performance. I also need to dig my Tokina AT-X 80-200/2.8 lens out of the closet for comparative purposes.
