p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Day house guest Emerald Moth Hemithea aestivaria

Although this is called the Common Emerald Moth it is a contender for our most beautiful Larger British Moth.

It is also on my list of the most awkward ones. It settled in a postiion* over our house stairwell. To shoot it, I had to climb almost to the top of the stairs and lean out as far as i could. The camera was at arm's length horizontally and I could just see to frame it in the Live View screen. I used twin RC flash TTL.

* This was its second position. The first one had been lower down but on a sloping section of ceiling, such that my main flash was tight up against that and I couldn't get the focal plane parallel to the moth. It then got fed up with my efforts and flew to the higher position.

It was not framed so tightly. I have rotated the image and cropped accordingly. The top right of the frame is cloned.

E-M1, Kiron 105mm f16.
