p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Backyard Coopers Hawk pt2 Bittersweet post

So I get up this morning and go outside to see if the Coopers Hawk is still there and what do you know, it was still there...in a slightly higher branch but in a much better photographic location. Only had a few minutes to take shots before heading off to work. Got home at 5:40 and heard blue jays screaming in the front of the house so I expected to find it around there. I really didn’t have the time to search so I went inside and saw my wife who asked if it was still around...told her what I heard...she asked if I checked the back...said no but then went out and looked in the tree...no hawk...but then I looked down and it was standing on the pool deck...I went to get my camera when I realized that the hawk was having a tough time and really couldn’t fly. It moved around erratically and I told my wife to call the Raptor’s Trust and get me a blanket....she got me a towel and I tossed it on top of the hawk, wrapped it up and drove it over to the Raptor’s Trust...they admitted it and said it was a yearling and probably dehydrated and not very successful yet as a hunter...they expect to keep it about a month before releasing it....so it was a bittersweet experience that I hoped would end up with us having a resident hawk....but happy to think it will probably survive this and terrorize someone else’s song birds 😊 I did manage to get some shots of it on the pool deck and my wife has a video of me capturing it....
Here are some shots from last night...iso 4000-6400 and then this morning and lastly on the pool deck around 5:45 before we took it to the Raptor Trust in a driving thunderstorm...luckily for us and the hawk the storm held off until I could capture it.

Bittersweet for sure Eric. You sure got some great shots of this guy before having to rescue him. I hope he does okay once they release him. My favourites here are 1 and 5.

Bravo Eric. I really hate to see an animal/bird in distress.your quick actions will more than likely save that birds life .It looks pretty good in your images .No cloudy eyes or out of place feathers so it was grooming .of all the homes and people in your area it choose you ,just goes to show how in touch wildlife is to people who care

My favorite shot of the bunch is 5, love the intense expression. What an interesting story Eric and good on you for doing what you think is best for the bird. Sometimes we get so wound up in our day to day lives that we somewhat forget the lives of the animals around us. Lot's to think about here, I hope the bird pulls through

Thanks KD...I am hoping it has fond memories of my yard and comes back to the consternation of my finches and sparrows

Thanks Morris....I know you would have done the same.....I'm just glad I got to it before the storm and before our neighbor's cats.

Thanks Michael...I'd like to think there is some karma here and certainly my yard was better than the neighbors with 2 cats....I guess I was lucky it wasn't a red tail...that would have been a bit trickier with larger talons and a more formidable beak.
