An original take on an ancient canyon that makes up part of the very origin of the 277 mile long, over a mile deep, Grand Canyon. I can never get enough of these special areas.

Thank you for looking.

Feel free to Facebook me if you so desire. I'll have a Sony A7R review up there soon among other things...

Pretty cool. That formation with the window is very interesting. Great sharpness throughout the frame.

Mark, this is fantastic! You guyz with the A7's are really rockin' the landscapes here!!!!
All the elements of a fine composition are right here.

The image looks nice...but I'm not digging the composition that much. Find it hard to get a visual focus in the image...fighting between the structure with the hole and the canyon.

I *love* the composition!! The rock formation on the left is pointing the viewer down into the frame, towards the river, followed by the river leading the view outside to the right. Very nicely executed and processed.

Cannot wait for commentary by Dan and Nigel! Popcorn anyone?

I like the overall tone with all that luscious red rock! Comp-wise it works for me, it is well balanced and the most interesting aspect is the story here, what's going on between the sky and the geology. The wind and river are hard at work here, the battle rages.
If I were to make any improvement it would be step up the shadows a bit.
Nice one Mark, your technicals are spot-on.

You see the rock formation pointing down into the image...I see it pointing up to the left and out of the image. Maybe that is where we differ. My eyes leave the image when looking at that rock formation.

Hi Carl. I too think the composition is one of my favorites. Just one of those moments when things worked out at the spur of the moment. Thank you for your encouraging feedback.

Hi Mark, I love this, to me the rock formation looks like the thing on a sundial pointing into the canyon, just checked and it is called a Gnomon, thought that!! cheers, Bill.

Sweet diagonals going on here. I like it a lot. Does the sun ever rise/set to the back right? I think this would look awesome with that formation and the tip of the horseshoe lit up by a low sun. Maybe light in the middle of the frame would help keep the eye in the frame better?

Truly magnificent photograph. Love how the red tones of the rocks complement the cool tones of the sky.

Thanks very much Greg! I will be down there leading 3 back to back all through Aug, then I might move down there for at least a few months (upwards to 6) so I am getting quite excited! Then it is off to paradise in April!
