After trying to shoot the moon tonight with my 55-200mm I realize I need a longer lens. What 400mm manual focus is out there I can use with my X-T1. It can be any mount as I can buy an adapter for it. Since I will be shooting the moon and outdoors it can be a 5.6 or higher. I'm looking for cheap and decent sharpness.

Are you after 400mm native-135mm focal length? Or equivalent, which would be just a bit under 300mm native fl? I'll assume the former.

I don't know if you'll get a really cheap lens to fill that niche. You could look at one of the older f/8 mirror lenses in the 500mm range.

Otherwise, you could go the route of a Canon 400mm f/5.6 w/ a $20 adapter (600mm equivalent!).

The other thing to be aware of is what it's like to look through an EVF, even a good one, at 400mm without optical image stabilization. Not necessarily easy.

Good luck! Maybe someone else will have an idea for you.

Yeah looking for a 400mm so it can be a 600mm equivalent on the X-T1. It will most likely be tripod mounted all the time and shot at F5.6 - F11.

Nikon, Canon, and Sigma have made 400/5.6's. I've never used one (although you've got me curious and now I might).

Have you tried cropping the center 50% of your 200mm images to make sure 400mm is the focal length you're looking for? For my taste that's too wide for the moon, even on 1.5x crop. I use a Nikon 1000/11 Reflex (on FF35) and even that has to be cropped pretty heavily.

You can get some sharp, decent 400 cheaply (below 100Euro),but then resulting images will require some PP to get rid of CA/LoCA.

The best value for money in this class are:

RMC Tokina 400/5.6 and it's clone Hoya 400/5.6

Tokina SD 400/5.6 with one SD glass - sometimes they go for about 100 Euro

Sigma 400/5.6 non APO and, (better),APO
If you're patient you can find one cheaply too).

Soligor 400/6.3 (under many brand names) - OK,but still usable.

How do you define "cheap"?

Even a 600mm equivalent isn't very much for moon shooting. I shot one of the Supermoons a while back with my OM-D and Canon 50-300/4.5L and while I got an OK shot, I still had to crop a ton. 1000mm-1200mm equivalent starts to get you close, so a 400mm+2x TC and a really sturdy tripod would be good.

Here's the shot I got with that 600mm equiv setup...this is about 80% of original size.

I was thinking about it this morning. I already have Canon 70-200mm II. If I put a 2x converter that would make it a 400mm 5.6. Once mounted on the Fuji that would convert it to a 600mm 5.6...I would have to set the aperture first on my 6D to F11 or F16 before hand, but I think I can make it work. Any thoughts?
