At first I thought it was a butterfly, then a dragonfly etc etc

Lovely shot. I envy your access to such insects.

For those who want to know more:

They are best known as Ribbon-wing Lacewings (Nemia costalis) but have other common names and are Neuroptera, Nemopteridae.

Together with the true lacewings, Chrysopidae, they are in the Planipennia part of the Neuroptera i.e. those with broad flat wings.

Truly a different looking butterfly. Here in the "states", one only sees these at conservatories.
Great capture!

Andy,

I must thank you for giving me the means to earn a credibility boost.

Yesterday my wife and I were discussing holiday options with our regular local travel agent. He is fully familiar with my interest in photography and with insects in particular.

The conversation drifted to insect-rich countries, and other countries of interest, including Turkey and he mentioned a "butterfly" he had seen in Turkey. He said it had long tails so I mentioned Swallowtails but he said he knew them and the tails were much longer. I mentioned the Ribbon-Tails and gave a brief description, only for it to be rejected. It had been a butterfly.

When I got home I searched for qualifying butterflies in the Turkish fauna and found none. However, there was one web page with an image of a "butterfly" which had been submitted and was identified on the website as a Ribbon-Tail. I sent my agent a link and he confirmed my guess as correct. I followed up with a link to this thread.

A week ago I would have been stumped for an answer.

Nice one Harold, it's my pleasure ! Yes, our searches on google images came across the insect a few times and people were calling it a butterfly.

Now that I'm back in Tropical North Queensland I have posted if you would care to look.
