So, my first post here at FredMiranda. I have been doing amateur concert photography for the last 18 months or so, mostly specializing in local bands and touring bands within the stoner/doom/sludge genre with a few forays into hard rock. When I first started, I was using a Canon XTi and 50mm 1.8 II, since I have moved on to a t3i with Magic Lantern, 50mm 1.4, and occasionally using a friend's Sigma 24mm 1.8 (which I am currently trying to get my own).

What I enjoy most about this photography is two-fold; first is the challenge. Most of the shows I shoot are in dingy, dirty, poorly lit venues. Lighting is spotty at best, nonexistent at worst. The performers move around like crazy. Many times I am shooting from the mosh pit, or I am stuck in one spot and can't move. I never use flash, so I am limited to fast primes. Autofocus is a waste, so I manually focus 90% of the time. These limitations force me to get creative or lucky with my shooting.

Second is the engagement I get with the performers. Carrying a camera into a show seems to draw attention, and it has allowed me to meet with some of my favorite musicians and have a very meaningful interaction with them. I am starting to develop a reputation as "the camera guy" (in a good way, I hope) to show regulars, so shooting has opened up opportunities to interact with the local music community as well.

Below are some of my favorite pics, and I would love to see what all of you think, good or bad.

Really nice images considering the challenges you are confronted with. Geez, manual focus on moving targets with no light. Your eyes must be a lot better than mine.

Photo 1 is really nice. Love the sculls in the RHS foreground.

Your image of "Fox Alive" is puzzling, he sure doesn't look like he fits that musical genre.

Nice to hear that your photography is getting you inside access to some of the musicians.

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, manual focus took a lot of practice. Moving from the XTi to the t3i with Magic Lantern did allow me to do more of my focusing in the view screen with focus peaking (still a challenge with the narrow depth of field). A lot comes down to trying to predict the movements, some down to luck.

Fox Alive is a local math-rock band, so yeah, not quite the same genre as the stoner/doom folks for sure.

Thanks for the kind words

All great. The Red Fang shot has three layers to look at -- musician, fellow photographer, and an audience member. A good thing.

Thanks! What I also really like about the Red Fang photo are that the photographer and audience member are both really good friends of mine.
