Is the 400mm f/5.6L considered to be one of the "big whites?"

What lenses specifically comprise this list?

Would one include the 200mm f/1.8 lens?

Anything faster than f/2.8 and longer than 200mm

While the 400 5.6L may be considered a 'big white' physically it ain't. After just a few weeks of use I'm in love with mine, a great action lens that's a true featherweight but produces like a heavyweight. Easy on the wallet too. Whats not to like.

According to the Canon Museum, the 400 f/5.6L is considered a Super Telephoto lens. The white 300 f/2.8 and white 200 f/2 and f/1.8 are classified as telephoto lenses.

My EF 200/1.8L is a "big white".

I have a feeling that we will have many "opinions" on this topic.

What about 500 f4, 600 f4, 800 f5.6 & 200-400 ( not to mention legendary 1200) - none of which are 2.8 or faster ....

When I think of the big whites I think of the ones that are heavy. I had the 400/5.6 for a while and one of the best things about that lens is that it is not a big white.

Currently I would say it's these: 200/2, 300/2.8, 200-400/4, 400/4, 400/2.8, 500/4, 600/4, 800/5.6 plus all the older models like the 200/1.8 you mentioned.

I think he meant "or" longer than 200

This has only to do with focal length. The term big white is a street term and the 200 f2 and 1.8 anlong with the 300 2.8 easily qualify. Personally I would only consider any lens white and with a front diameter of greater than 82mm as big or great white but I don't think there are any "rules" for this

How about any lens that costs more than $2500.

But it also must be "white."

I agree with this list but find the 400 f/4 to be a marginal entry.

Any lens with a 77mm front thread can't be considered a big white, which excludes the 400f5.6, 300f4 & 100-400 from the list.

It's probably just that weird green band. All the others have red ones.

Here's my list of big whites, sorted by weight in the first table, and by used price in the second table.

Would be helpful if you had a list by weight using pounds instead of that weird kg measurement.

The 400 f/4 is the only entry which weighs less than 2 kilograms.

Multiply that "weird" kg weight by 2.2 = lbs.
