p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Unsharp images with A7r and Macro lense--why?

I am using a Sony 100 macro f2.8 Alpha A mount lens on a Sony A7r with a Sony adapter. I am shooting closeups of flowers, doing focus stacking with 6-8 Images. I am also using a Sony 5 inch LCD monitor to help focusing. The images look sharp on the monitor and focus peaking verifies this on each frame in the sequence. However, after stacking in Photoshop, the images are not sharp—see attached sample and look at 100 % .

When I use my Sigma 50mm Merrill—the stacking result is razor sharp. This may not be a fair comparison, but I do expect much sharper results using the Sony Macro.

Could focus shift explain the above result?? Any other explanation? I do not understand how the image appears sharp on the camera LCD and viewfinder, as well as the Large monitor but the result is so unsharp, even with stacking.

I am aware of the vibration issue with this camera but the degree of unsharpness I am seeing is much more than the samples posted demonstrating this problem--so I believe I am seeing something else.

I did discuss the problem with B+H and they suggested I exchange the lens and that is in the works.

Are the individial images pre stack sharp? Are you making sure to stay out of the shutter speeds where the A7r shows shutter vibration (or use flash) as macro would be far tougher on shake than telephoto use? Have you tried other stacking software (photoshop is, as with stitching, the lowest common denominator for specialist tasks like this). Have you tried more stacking steps? If sending RAW files (which sharpening turned off) to stack are you then sharpening the resulting image afterwards?

Good luck!

What I would do is go through step by step to identify at which stage the "unsharpness" materializes. The easiest thing to do is check the individual shots before stacking them. That will let you know if it is the stacking process which is at fault, or the pics themselves. If it is the pics, it could be either the lens (or adapter), or the capture. Tests on the vibration from the A7R shutter show that it only happens at certain shutter speeds, so either halve or double your shutter speed and check individual pics for sharpness. If there is no major change, then it isn't camera shake, and your lens becomes the prime suspect.

I don't see any image, but you can just upload your images to any free image hosting service (flickr, picasa, photobucket, etc. etc.) and post a direct link link here.

Less depth of field on the A7 than the APS-C Merrill, 6-8 seems rather few layers except for very small flowers, I use around 10 on the Merrill and 16 plus for the same flower at f8 on a full frame ( 5D3).
